New Etec 90

Quite pleased so far ... has a bit of a weird area about 3000 rpm where it sounds like it misses, but it doesen't , cos there is still power ? and it throttles up no problem and back down to idle.

Economy is good, and no shortage of 2 stroke grunt. We can cruise around most of the afternoon on 3-4 gallons at cruising speed .. .. I know thats not very scientific but its better than the 75 it replaced and we dont need WOT for decent speeds

Are you sure the "weird" area is at 3000rpm? It's normally around 2000, it's as the engine switches from Stratified to Homogenous burn, which is a trick it uses to reduce fuel consumption & emissions at low revs.
Also, you might want to start adding around an eggcup full of oil to each 20l/5gal of fuel, this increases the lubricity of the fuel & can help prevent injector problems (one of the weak spots of the Etec imho) The increasing amounts of ethanol make the fuel "dry" & can cause the injectors to overheat in extreme cases of long runs at high revs.

You could be right ... it might just be over 2000 actually , and what you describe could certainly be what I'm hearing. I noticed no change in power or pick up, so I know its not a problem, its just they way it 'sounds' thanks for the info PD ... Is adding oil a lifetime thing or just now and again ? and I assume that will be XD100 ? (which smells of urea I found quite intriguing ... is that the outboard equivalent of add blue?)

Re: the oil, its a life time thing but not the end of the world if you forget now & then. I use XD100 'cos that's what I've got, but you could use any TCW3 oil just to increase the lubricity. Yup the XD100 does smell of p155 Adding a drop of oil to the fuel goes for any DI engine, not just etecs imho, 2 or 4 stroke, it helps to lubricate the injectors.

Perhaps I should start doing also! I've never added anything to my fuel before, is this something that BRP recommends or just a tip from the forums?

It's not official BRP advice, it came from a main dealer after I had an injector fail. It can't hurt & can only help.

Nothing official from BRP, I had to replace an injector on one of my engines, & the dealer advised me to do it.

.....sh1t happens.......

Bit confusing as to why though ... so are there moving parts in a modern petrol injector ?

Gives extra lube to pump and injectors

The Etec injector is a moving voice coil type. It works similarly to a loudspeaker. Electrical pulses are produced by the EMM & passed to a wire wound coil in the injector, the coil creates a magnetic field which operates a piston in the injector, this opens & closes in time to the pulses & injects fuel into the cylinder. The piston is cooled & lubricated by fuel fed into the injector body by the HP fuel pump in the vapour separator. The problem arises due to the fuel not lubricating the piston adequately, this then overheats & the voice coil goes open circuit, it's only very fine copper wire.
A dash of oil in the mix, helps lube the piston.

Ok cheers fella .. so having a large loudspeaker next to your etec could also affect performance or even a mobile phone
