New Boat

Hi evryone been a member for while and have quietly been taking on board all your very useful advice whilst i have been hunting out a new rib. I have now come to the stage where i have the one that ticks all the boxes. I have found an Osprey Eagle Hardnose 6m
year not known but in good nick and a 90 mariner on the back I intend to use it for family fun and fishing (fishing is what it will be mainly used for the family bit is so i can get away with buying it).
Does anybody out there have any opinions on the boat and it's suitability. All views welcome.

thanks

You're welcome.

A 90 on a 6m boat is not enough. With a family onboard, she'll be sluggish to say the least.

Thanks mollers luckily i have a small family at the moment.

i have been told that it will be sluggish but also that it will be the opposite. when i first saw the boat i thought the same as you and had already priced a 115 four stroke. what make would anyone out there go for?

I'd be looking at bigger than a 115 for a 6m boat.

Yeah, don't bother with less than 150. You'll gain nothing in economy and lose a lot in fun and useability.

Just checked the Osprey site. The 6m Eagle is apparently only rated to 115.

Weird, as the 6.6m Seaharrier is rated to 250.

bigger than a 115 you think? Most boats that i have been looking at have been in that area for engine size are you saying bigger for just speed or general performance?

I can see an increase in budget coming, better sell some more onions!

Do you remember what the Eagle is rated for? I have a feeling it's not a 6m boat either.

<edit>
After a bit of searching found this:-

http://rib.net/forum/showpost.php?p=289759&postcount=19

Says the Eagle is a 5.6m boat rated to 115hp.

I'd forget the Eagle and go for a 5.8 Vipermax with a 150.

Beat that Willko, got there in 3 posts.

What speed/fuel use etc does the 5.8 give with a 150, out of interest?

45-46 knots max, lightly loaded, 1.2nm/l cruising at around 30 knots, 0.7 nm/l at full pelt

Nonsense, you have not yet begun to defile yourself.

I'll give you Viper-MAX marks if you can work in a famous name from the Fal catchment in two more posts

I chuck this into the pot as a thought:

If it's mainly for fishing, one up it's likely going to have a reasonable performance for lugging one man & his rods around. I assume if you going fishing you'll be accelerating approx twice per outing, and is an extra couple of knots really going to make or break your day?

Add the family, and is sluggish a huge problem? - Break them in gently (rather than scaring them off the boat forever in the first 10 mins) , and use the time to find a nice 115 for it so you can have "family fun" when they are more confident in and around the boat.

This of course assumes the hull is, your ideal hull. Remember if it's "only" rated for 115 HP, chances are it's going to be quite a lightweight hull, so may not be as sluggish as generic paper theory would hint - I use my decrepit old Humber as an example. Rated for 60Hp, but the whole lot ready to go weighs in at 420Kg (Incl 85L of fuel). The new version (O-Pro 2m Beam) weighs in at 295Kg for the hull alone, but is rated for a 90........ Then add the previous discussion ref it;s actual length. toob tip to nose is generally half - 3/4 a meter bigger than the inside space. Some people measure the "hull" rather than the LOA.

my Osprey Eagle was just fine with 130 yamaha strapped on the back,
up on the plane in seconds and flew as straight as an arrow of them there swells in bristol channel, i was concerned over the transom at first but was told by the builder it could more than cope with it,
but truly rated at 115hp and this is 2 stroke weights not a lumpy metal modern 4-banger.

there was one advertised with 150 opti on not to long ago.
