Navy movements

A large group of warships has just passed my house.
They are about 15-20miles out, running roughly along a line between Start Point and Portland Bill.
They may have come from Plymouth and be on their way to Portsmouth?
The group consists of at least one aircraft carrier and 8 escorting frigates/destroyers.
Does anyone have a clue as to what this is all about?
It is an unusually large number of vessels. Unfortunately they were too far away to be able to distinguish their nationality.

You dont think they were on their way to salute JK at The Boat Show do you?

Hi Brian

Maybe they want to be included in the census they are doing out there at the moment?

How are you feeling this week?

Rupert

Do the Royal Navy have that many ships?

Are you sure it wasn't a mirage.

If they were going into Portsmouth you can get all the planned shipping movements here:

http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/ViewArti...ticleID=718729

Who says we don't give the enemy a head start by broadcasting all our military movements.

You can even watch them on webcam on that page.

Biggles Do the Royal Navy have that many ships?
I have a complete list of all RN ships with tonnage, NATO pennant no., crew size, tonnage and date of build in Excel format.
Anyone who want a copy, send me an e-mail.

I print mine out, laminate it and add it to my ships papers on-board.
Then whenever I see a warship in the distance I can impress the hell out of my mates by saying "Oh yes F123, HMS Bloggs, 3047 tons I think" (after taking a crafty peep at the list of course).

Anoraks of the world unite!

Jon,
You are absolutely right, of course, but in my life-long quest for the totality of knowledge of b*****r all, I include below a list of the other laminated documents I carry on-board. Other anoraks amongst you may (FOC) use this as a checklist.

Useful phone numbers (esp. those cruising with “my” group)
The aforementioned NATO list (you never know!)
Insurance Certificate
Bill of Sale showing I have paid EEC VAT
Declaration of CE conformity
Certificate of British Registration
Copy of CG66
Owners manual and Hull Identification Number
Recommended check and servicing schedule and engine fluids diagram
Copy of boats current radio validation document
DSC Flowchart and operational procedures
My personal licenses:
Short Range Radio Certificate
ICC
Sea Survival
PBL’s 1,2 and Advanced
Commercial Endorsement
Copy of passport
VHF Channel numbers of all ports/marinas and harbours in GB (and it’s various island groups) and Ireland
Marina names in geographic sequence for GB, Ireland and all European countries down to Gibraltar
Copies of all manuals for the engine, leg and all instruments including wiring diagrams (not that I understand them-but somebody might)

Jon, you were just sneakily asking me for a copy of the Navy ship’s list without losing your "street cred." weren’t you?
That would make you the 35th person to ask for it so I feel quite comfortable snuggling back down into my anorak.

What amazes me is that it has been over an hour now since my above posting, and Richard and Louise have not yet posted any additions/corrections/deletions or arguments over my list.
With heavy heart, I assume this to be that they are about to produce an exhaustive tome of such magnitude that it is taking them a little time to assemble it.

at your post, Brian.

Well I learnt the teensy weensy bit I (think!) I know (?) from Richard and he learnt everything he knows from masters such as yourself and Alan. I wouldn't dare to add, correct, delete or argue with anything you post!!

Alas, Richard is a different beast and is probably typing his post as we speak!
