Ah..the old what does the colour mean question...my understanding (likely to be wrong)

White..royal navy
Red..British flagged
Blue..member of a royal club(royal lymingyon something maybe?)

Like I say..I'm probably wrong...

my understanding:

white = navy
blue = merchant Navy
red = pleasure

the RYA a red defaced ensign?

More complicated - RYS members fly white also. Blue is for British Registry merchant / Navy Reserve and red is anyone who has British Registry. There are also special warrants granted to certain yacht clubs which allow members (on application) to fly a special ensign. This can be blue, blue defaced or red defaced (defaced = a logo). The rules are quite strict and the boats flying them have to be over a certain size etc. Many of the clubs with a special ensign have Royal in front, but not all. Royal Lymington is a red defaced. The one on the Protector is a defaced blue of the Royal Ocean Racing Club (of which I am a member). I always have to have the warrant on me to present to any authority should they ask. The problem with special ensigns is that you have to follow all the flag rules if you fly it. There has to be a club burgee flown and you are expected to raise the ensign at certain times and lower it at sunset etc. Flag etiquette can be very tedious unless you are interested!
