My wife has been informed that it is bad luck to change name of boat

When we purchased our rib it came with the name 'viking'.

I wanted to change the name but my wife informs me that it is 'bad luck' to change the name of a previously owned boat.
So, we go through a conversation whereby I tell her that there is no such thing as 'luck' and that luck is nothing more than a head or tail toss of a coin, the outcome being '50/50 chance'

So what gives here, does superstition rule the day?

If my boat was named Viking I would not change it, unlucky or not.
Theres a ritual you can do for a name change but I wouldn't risk it if ya go to sea. Yeah I'm a wee bit superstitious.

Cheers, Squid

It's also supposed to be bad luck to have a woman on a ship. So she has a choice - believe in superstition and leave you in peace on Viking or declare it nonsense and join you on new-name. There are some rituals to rename a boat - google will find them for you - even if you don't believe them I am sure there will be alcohol involved so you could go along with them "for tradition" ;-)

I have renamed 4 out of the 5 boats i have owned. The one i had the worst "luck" with was the one I didnt rename.
Luck is nothing more than a series of unconnected events resulting in a series of unintentional consequences.

Changing a boat's name is not smething to undertake lightly - any more than you'd change the name of your child or partner on a whim.

If it were a name that you (your partner - and by reluctant default you- I'm a realist) CAN'T live with e.g , "Wave of Ecstasy", "Dog's Bollocks" etc then consider it, but it would have to be for a better name. "Viking" seems OK to me.

What's your wife's objection, and doe she have a better suggestion, "Pansy", "Rosebud", "Duckling"?

If you do change her name as others have said, ensure due process is carried out- although smashing a bottle of bubbly on the bow will be
a) an awfully long process
b) a waste of good bubbles - you can't scrimp quality on such an important event
c) contra-indicated for the longevity of your tubes (and the Rib's).

Do let us know the outcome.

RIBase
I couldn't bring myself to rename mine due to the potential influx of bad luck, so Beretta has stuck!

Also......

Using a gas burner to remove the old name could incite bad luck..

Before you do rename it, think about that VHF call as you arrive at a marina..
I had one called Knotty Buoy...doesn't sound so smart with you're mates on the boat when you have to shout that over the radio and then.....further humiliation....having to spell it.

Well I guess what you do depends on your attitude to ladders. Do you walk around them or under them?

Ladders aren't boats on Mother ocean, and Vikings have real old gods.
Yes I'm Scandinavian so I love the name.

Cheers, Don

Well, there is some great advice there, I am impressed.

Still undecided what to do but if I do change name then it will be my decision for sure. I really liked the idea of changing my wife tbh but don't think I could afford a newer model.

Thanks for the replies

Never believed a bar of any superstitions or religion. My great great great great great great great grandfather ( Noah) once built a boat he called the Ark, on it he took Mr & Mrs Santa Claus for cruises all over the world. This boat has since been renamed P&O due to there being a piano in each cabin ( converted stable ).

Years ago there was a large black hull speedboat with a sickly pink deck. The name of the boat had been carefully painted on in a large hand written type font.
Now if I had bought this boat I would most definitely change the name.
Oh the boat was called "P*** Flap pink"
Could you imagine calling the coastguard with that one!

DON'T DO IT!!!,

I'm not superstitious, despite being a fisherman for years and now working on a ferry. I still say salmon aboard ship and not 'pink fish' like many of my shipmates. I call a pig a pig and not a 'grunter' or 'curly tail'. A rabbit to me is a rabbit and not an 'underground hen'. Neither do I get panicky if a woman, minister or black cat walks on my ship. However, changing a boats name is just asking for trouble. A mate of mine bought a fishing boat who's name had been changed, it sunk twice on him!!! The second time I salvaged it fro 18m of water and spent two years refurbishing it. Upon doing some research into it I found the original name was Conqueror and had been changed by the previous owner to my mate. I also found out that it had sank on him three times!!! I changed the name back to its original, had the boat for years, used it for clam diving mainly and through having the vessel acquired my wife. My son is now at uni, has started diving and I'm now looking for a RIB after a 30 odd year gap :-)
