Mets 2003

Off on a trip to Amsterdam for the Marine Trade show (18 - 20 Nov) to look at boaty stuff (http://www.metstrade.com) - anyone else going? Anyone got any touristy recomendations for Amsterdam? - before you come up with the obvious, I'm taking my girlfriend , who I am sure would not be interested in the Red Light District! !

Looking forward too, but not really expecting some usefull suggestions,

As a dutchman and working in amsterdam I can recommend a tour through the canals of amsterdam. Stick to the water (or maybe the beer)

I can recommend the Rijksmuseum (bit of culture, The Nightwatchman etc), the Anne Franck House (bit of WWll sobriety) or the excellant Torture Museum (VERY interesting, give you some good ideas for any recalcitrant crew member).
The Flower Market (the open air canal-side one-not the professional auction) is very interesting and Amsterdam is very "walkable". (I mean, if you get a chance to be invited to the professional auction, go. But I doubt you will be allowed in.)
You must go into an Indonesian restaurant and order a Riistafel (just do it !!) you will love it. Also if you are there for another evening go to the Mongolian Restaurant. All within easy walking distance of each other.

Thanks Brian - Funnily enough my girlfriend is a professional in the flower business - will everyone know where the flower market is? Any Indonesian or Mongolian restaurants in particular?

The public Flower Market is :
The Bloemenmarkt
In an area of Amsterdam called Singel
it is open: Monday to Saturday 9.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m
The professional market is out near the airport, but as I said, you wont get in.

For Indonesian food there are loads of restaurants, any will be good, but here is the website of one:

http://show-info.nl/amsterdam/e/edit...pup/Puri_Mas_e

The riistafel is just a generic name for "I don't know what I want just bring me loads and loads of diferent things and I'll try them out". You cant miss!!

The Mongolian Restaurant that I used to go to regularly is in the Marnixstraat (if it is still open). You can find it on this map:
http://www.amsterdam.info/print/map/c3.php

...........just next to the info office.
Incidentally this map page also shows you the location of the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and others.

Have a good one.

if you want to vised a great trading center for flouwers look at the sit www.vba.nl. The trading center is situated a few km from schiphol airport. (they trade 20 million flouwers a day). For good restaurants visit the "Leidse plein" there you can also have your "rijsttafel)

greetings rene
