Yep - considering we were 35knts over the limit

Had no idea it was there and had to all squint to see the yellow marks.

But he was very very nice about it .

Well, at the risk of sounding like a complete smart-arse, I've always found it beneficial to consult paper charts of areas I'm unfamiliar with before venturing forth - part of the passage planning process if you like, along with tide tables, weather, local cruising guides, etc.

Having said that, I used to have a house in Port Dinorwic so the 5 knot limit is a well-known local feature but then again, so are the rocks in the Swellies but you'd be amazed how many vessels get towed into PD with knackered sterngear because they've hit one of them.

Charts or no charts, the swellies are a v difficult bit of water to navigate, even in a rib. Currents can push you off course and the channel is v narrow in parts, it catches many out!

I saw on the video footage from the cruise that many boats at below 1/2 water ventured quite far off line to port between the brittannia bridge and the cottage, mainly to avoid being sat in another's wake, but they were close to rocks just underwater.

we towed a fairly big yatch off the rocks close to Britannia bridge a couple of years back, he cut across a bit too soon and caught that big lump under the hull on the hard stuff, he was very lucky we got him off, a few more minutes and he'd of been well stuck, needed all 150 of them horses to get it moving, made a horrible noise when it did move, he'd done same thing at Pilots Cove the previous year I've caught the skeg on Swellies Rock, but only when drifting with the current, too busy watching the wildlife,

1984 i worked on the straits and had the job of taking potential buyers to Ynys Gored Goch (the island). That summer think we towed 4 yachts to deeper water between the swellies and Beaumaris.

Spent a lot of time canoeing in the swellies, you learn quick where the tide flows that close to the water

Don't remember any speed limits then

Speed limit??? Oh yeah Mine was..49.6knots after the Round Island thing..two up and light fuel
May have got 50 but had to slow up for a Big Bridge!
