the man with the speed gun works for the harbour master at Caernarfon, so I guess if they really did want to do something they could, but as far as I'm aware it's usually just a gentle reminder, but I would agree with HP it was the jet skiers that caused the original problem. as Tony said, it's on the charts so no excuse really

Weren't two certain boats (whistling) challenged and they very politely told him where to go... As one was towing the other and he nearly went between them in his haste to chastise them.

I think some kind of mediation was involved to prevent any damage being done..... to anyone....

I have sat on a mooring many a night in this location and it is surprising how much a boat doing over the five knot limit causes, hot water scalds aren't nice!!

Ah ok, Ill hold my hand's up.........
I am a past victim.

Yes it's true the 5 knot marker buoys are easy to miss at both end's of the area. I missed one as I entered the area in my early days of ribbing and first outing down the straits. Before I knew it the guy was all over me like a rash with a loud hailer and blue flashing lights.
I was asked to kill the engine, he came along side and tied up to my Rib.

To be fair to the fella he didnt have an attitude, he simply wanted to make me aware of the speed limit and the reasons for it, namely the moorings, sailing club, and populated area. He gave me a copy of the chart of the area and proceded on his way.

I had no problem with our conversation and dont object to adhering to the speed limit. To be honest, as far as I am aware it is the only section of the straits where a 5 knot limit exists so only happy to comply

Thanks for the replies guys, I thought that keeping well away from moored boats would have sufficed, but hey rules are rules! I did think of asking how fast the chap in the little launch could go...but then Chris says he works for harbourmaster at Caernarfon(which happens to be where we are based) so perhaps not wise!?

There's a rather large RIB with some meaty Smokers on the back that he sometimes uses. But if it's his Shetland, could be worth a punt at WOT police, camera, action style! ;-)
