I've packed the winch up with a bit of 3x3 timber since that pic was taken, so it now pulls horizontally forwards.

As you can see the winch & jockey wheel handles need to be "out of sync" whilst using either, but compared to the standard set-up (the snubber as a separate item & two separate braces doing what the snubber is now doing to brace the post) I managed to loose something like 10 inches off the rig length by doing that.
