Steven - whats the satellite coverage like in your part of the world. I know its patchy over the poles - are you close enough that this is a problem?

I think it's OK for distress coverage - remember we're only as far south as London is north - 52 deg S.

The GPS coverage is excellent - have had 12 satellites at once on my handheld eTrex on more than one occasion

As I keep reminding anyone who'll listen to me, Thank God for the Gulfstream Current. We're up there (55N) on the same latitude as Moscow and Newfoundland, but look at the climate we have! Wicked.

The only available distress option here is "send helicopter" so I think I'll stick with a PLB

You're right though, Spot misses my bit of sea completely.

Yes - a bit ropey down there, but there been launching new satellites and installing new ground stations to enhance coverage - latest map I been given is [here]

New product coming out later this month: SPOT Connect - basicly a Satellite Modem for your smart phone - and when phone goes flat you have the device to send S0S Message like the SPOT 2.....price not been released. a preview of it can be found [here]

SPOT 1 and SPOT 2 are good products, I sold quite few of them since they came out, including 120 units of SPOT 2's to a large oil company !
