Max HP for a 6.5m Porters Renegade

Anyone out there know for sure the max HP and weight that a 6.5 Porters Renegade is rated for. Can't get an answer from Porters and their web site just states "most people are happy with a 120HP".

Thanks

Sorry, I don't have a definitive answer and it sounds like you're unlikely to get one. It might be worth having a marine engineer have a proper look at it.

I'd be staggered if it couldn't take at least a 150hp motor. I guess it comes down to the strength of the transom

its the same craft as a Tohatsu one design or a Solent 6.5 if that helps

plenty of Solents with 200 on them but they run very sweet with a 150 opti. (the back end can be a bit twitchy under the hammer)

Thanks, that was pretty much my thinking, but when you start looking for a used 150 they all disappear and 200s and 225 become very plentiful!! I will keep looking.

I don't mean to question your experience and obviously greater knowledge of RIBs than me Stu but are you sure it's the same Hull as a Solent or Tohatsu 6.5? I thought they were beamier and a shallower hull and were based on a BWM design. An older member, Mark ? had one with an upgraded Tohatsu 120 (140). He was pretty happy with its performance till the deck rotted out.

The Tohatsu One Design we had with n Opti 150 was very twitchy indeed. That hull was not rated to carry this engine. It had a 120hp limit if I remember correctly

There is a "formula" for working out the maximum design rating - my understanding is that you should only exceed this in the RCD ratings if you actually test and prove it is safe. This might prove a useful guide - it doesn't guarantee the transom is strong enough but it might be rough guide and if I remember correctly it is reasonably conservative? Search my posts for 'ISO maximum' and you might find it.

This is a big if... But if the Porters Renegade 6.5 is the same as the BWM Deepsea 21 then this might be of interest to you: http://www.rib.net/forum/f8/bwm-deep...ded-29409.html

Wasn't it a Paul Lemmer design, might be worth contacting him if it was.

I have a 2004 6.5m Porters which is rated to 140hp on the CE plate.

To settle the argument: The Solent and Tohatsu 6.5 are the same hull, originally a Phantom design. The BWM Deep Sea 21 is a Lemmer design which I gather was "acquired" by Porters. This has a wider beam and flared bow. Porters did also make a 6.5 which is based on the same Phanton hull used in the Solent and Tohatsu models. Complicated!!

As clear as Mud then

Can you post a picture of your RIB so that we can identify which one it is?

I've had a look though your photo's and can't identify it as a BWM Deepsea 21 hull, but it's not a Solent/Tohatsu hull either.

This old advert might be helpful to you in identifying it for you. It's being sold with an Evinrude 175hp

SECOND HAND PORTERS 175 FICHT RIB - £13,950.00

Thanks Andy

My gut feel is that it would take a 150 comfortably, it is a heavy lay up with a very solid transom compared to may similar sized RIBs that I have looked at. Just a case of finding the right one.

Regards

Andy
