Mackerel in the Solent

Anyone had much luck this year?

I was out at the Forts yesterday and cought three, nothing like the number I would have expected?

We were out on Saturday went to three of our usual spots and got sod all of anything.

I think they've all gone off on their summers holidays

The guls were working hard in Portsmouth harbour yesterday.

I caught two off No Mans Land Fort yesterday, it was hard going! I think that they have deserted the Solent as I heard reports of plenty being caught in more offshore locations East and South of the Nab. I didn't see you, where did you launch from Andy

Was out by the forts on Friday, and huge numbers of mackerel there, driving the bait fish up to the surface. Caught all I needed in 20 minutes.
Had a bumper haul 3 weeks ago as well.

And I think I am a useless fisherman !!!!!!! Dreaming of catching a bass !!!!

Round the back of the Needles caught 12 in a hour or so!

There are plenty off Hengistbury so I've been told, so I think they're just avoiding the central Solent at the moment.

Looks like a case of right place wrong time!!!

My experience Mackerel'n around here tells me that 3hrs before HT is the best time around the forts, goes off at slack and is just as useless on the ebb.

I love it when the shoals come to the surface, reminds me of a stampeding herds of animals.

Have the May algae blooms cleared the Solent yet? I am a bit further west at Lyme Bay, and the algae only cleared last week, bringing in hoards of Mack. Don't forget the sea temperature is a couple of degrees down on the norm, meaning usual patterns are about a month late. They are on their way!

Had a few schoolies take the pi$$ yesterday, when I was out spearmissin off of here.

Had to let fly at some pollock to vent my fustration. They're filleted off in the fridge.

That's probably a better way to catch fish. On Sat I snagged 3 lines and lost the weights and 11feathers. I did get my revenge later on a Pollock.

Yeah, but you don't have bloody earache. My recovery line came undone on the first shot, had to go deep to get the spear back. Booked an appt with Dyno-nurse to get 'em unblocked.

Mackerel off black rock Saturday ( Yarmouth ) and both sat and sun off the needles, sat lunch time ( ebbing tide ) we were getting full strings nearly every drop

caut 3 all weekend even mackerell fishing trip boats off looe were landing nothing it seemed . caut a few pollock so the cats happy and saw lots of decent sized spider crabs , must try eating them . We saw about 6 large dolphins and a baby cruising along just east of plymouth and they have been seen over the weekend between looe and plymouth so maybe they have eaten all the fish
rather them than the sad trawler i saw laying a fine net from penlee point half way to the breakwater .
