Mackerel fishing

Hello,

Just a few questions about fishing for mackeral. I have used feathers with varying degrees of success but am less keen on them since there are 6 hooks which can easily puncture my tubes. I have also used the dexter wedge and found that its brilliant but i dont like the 3 hook design which makes 'de hooking' the fish harder!

Dangle your rod off the back of the transom no tubes there or get a longer rod so when you lift the rod the feathers our further away from the tubes.

Do you mean there are 6 feathers on the line?

I use a couple of feathers on the line which makes the pointy ends much more controllable if you're bringing the line in.

I don't fish but my Dad does in my SIB occasionally and he's put some sort of clip on the line and then he just clips the feathers on and takes them of again when finished.
Works well and no worry of punctures whilst wave jumping.

Use 4 feathers and land the fish into a plastic box.

Use a 3 feather trace. Turn the hook tips "inward" a tad - just a tad. Use a wide mouth bucket or plastic box for landing the fish into. I use a small priest to finish them off quickly - stops 'em flapping blood and scales all over the SIB.

Thanks for the replies. The box and cutting off a couple of hooks seems a useful idea! Just another quick one, how do you lot finish them off?

Hold them belly up in your left hand, stick your thumb in the mouth and bend the head back, it breaks the neck and they don't even twitch.

Fancy Priest. I use a bit of broom handle wiv a length of roofing lead wrapped around it, 'cos it is cheap and disposable, especially if there be trouble at the slip. Innit

Few options,

Cut a few hooks off.

Bend the hooks inwards or change the hook for a different type.

Hang a towel over the tubes so that if you do accidentally catch one it gets tangled in the towel.

Get a telescopic landing net, put the fish & hooks into this then bring it into the boat for de-hooking ect ect.

Aye then spend an hour getting the hooks out of the netting
