Lymingtin slipway

Hey

So I've finally bought myself a rib, doing powerboat level 2 soon a friend of mine is instructor!! already know most of it just need the paper! done VHF course and booked onto day skipper theory starting next week!

I have a caravan near lymington so I'm going to be keeping it down there, have two options for storage either at a mates farm on trailer or in berthon on trailer! Berthon is more expensive than farm but seems to have more benefits I.e closer to slip, don't have to worry about parking for the car and trailer and paying for it! No towing so less fafing which can only be a good thing!

I understand the car parking situation is a nightmare during the summer, which if true is another major contributor to my thinking of using berthon!

Now to the stupid questions I have searched the forums and looked on boat launch but could work out what it meant!

What are the launching / recovery times for lymington slip? On the web it says 3/4 tidal but not sure how that equates back!

I don't have a fancy 4x4 just a vw golf but I know the slip is nice there and I should be able to recover from there!

The other plus point this avoids me having to tow it a long way

at this stage I'm not confident at towing!

From what I've read in here you guys won't like the rib choice!! when I took it out it ran nice and I felt comfortable with it which to me is the important thing! It's a 5.6m Avon adventurer with a 90hp merc / mariner!

Any advise would be great

Hi, I would keep it at the easiest place with the most facilities and the best security. I would have thought that free parking near the slip would be a great advantage too, trust me if you are going to pay then pay a little more and get it right.

3/4 tidal means you can launch and recover until the tide is 3/4 out and the tide times change so you will need to get a tide times book for Lymington or an app for your phone.

Think you've worked it out for yourself. Launch and recover before and up to 3/4 tide. If you get Tucabo tide planner app on iPhone makes it simple day skipper course will explain it all.

Hi. Most of my launching is from the public slipway in Lymington. Yes, during the summer it can get busy, but if you are patient it is usually not too much of a problem. Parking can be an issue, with parking on meters, so lots of coins or parking permits, or a bit of a walk! It will depend on budgets etc. but like Whisper, I would go for the least hassle solution - in general you will get more pleasure and use your boat more.
The public slip itself is good, virtually unaffected by weather conditions, and depending how adventurous you are, launching/recovery with a boat the size of yours is possible at all states of the tide. I used to launch my XS550 irrespective of tidal state, but did sometimes have to resort to a long line for recovery. However, I cannot launch/recover the bigger Osprey at low water +/- 1.5 hours or so, the exact time varying on whether springs or neaps.
Your Golf should be OK for launching and recovery, just make sure that your front wheels are not on the high tide 'scum' that often collects at most slipways.

I assume that you meant to say the same as Whisper with regards 3/4 tide but you've actually said the opposite! To clarify: 3/4 tide means that you can launch/recover after and then down to 3/4 tide (ie you may have difficulty launching/recovering during 1/4 tide although, as Ian M says, this will depend upon the length and draft of your boat as well as actual water depth as the result of barometric pressure, wind direction and strength etc).

For a hard copy tidal booklet I would recommend this: Force 4 Tidal Planner - LYMINGTON - Only £5.95 - Force 4 Chandlery (although the 2013 version!). I and our marina use the Poole version of it.

As a regular user of this slipway I would also add it makes a big difference springs to neaps. While low water neaps is not a problem low water springs is.
Personally if you get the opportunity you can't beat a quick reccy at a low water springs and it helps to make your own mind up. (And you can see for yourself where the areas to avoid are)

This could get very confusing if we are both there at the same time apart from the fact I have a moustache (think 118 118 but quite a bit older).

looking like I need a ticket for around 30 hrs ..

It's not cheap, lots park in Stanley Road just around the corner, or you could call Lymington Yacht Haven and arrange to park the car & trailer in the marina car park, it's a short walk back to the boat on the coastal footpath.

Not only is it very expensive your chance of finding a space for car and trailer is usually very poor too. As said above park on the surrounding roads is a very common practice.

Try Berthon's ship yard 500m down the road.I park my trailer there sometimes.01590673312 and ask for the marina office they deal with it.

If you intend to launch regularly 25 quid (anyone) gets you a 3 month parking clock - another advantage is that this clock covers many car parks throughout Lymington and the New Forest. Very useful Tesco/Waitrose/M&S areas so can also go shopping!! Make sure you get the long term one. You can even use this clock in the 3 hrs slots (but only for 3 hrs) Buy at Lymington Town Hall.

I also use Lymington regularly. Try to avoid days and times when Lymington Town Sailing Club are launching - chaos!

I stand to be corrected but I'm not sure the long term clock is valid in the slipway car park. Perhaps someone can confirm?

I find the best tactic is to get there really early - 0730 or so. That way there is usually some on street parking available for free.
