Loss of ICG Helo - Rescue 116

Coast Guard helicopter with four crew on board missing off Mayo, one person recovered - Independent.ie

These guys do a fantastic job in all weather conditions at great risk to themselves
Sincerely hoping for a good outcome.

1 has been found - in critical condition. Let hope they can find the rest of the crew and fast.

Really not looking good at this point.

Doesn't seem like PLBs were set off and good weather conditions.
Looks like a catastrophic failure. Hard to imagine given the level of maintenance on probably the newest and most advance rescue Helo operating in the world today. Here's hoping the other three are found in better condition than the first survivor.
Shocked!

You couldn't ask for a more straightforward mission -just shadowing another Helo on a Medevac.

RIP Captain Dara Fitzpatrick -she didn't make it after being recovered in critical condition.

Paid the ultimate price so that others might be safe. Tragic.

May the rest of the crew be found ASAP and thoughts etc with Family, friends, colleagues and those searching.

Shocking and tragic. Specially to happen to CG helicopter.

Helos seem like one of those things where there's no such thing as 'minor' incident. When they go wrong the go wrong in a big way.

I know that I speak for all my compatriots when I say that this terrible news has struck us to the very core. Men and women that we literally looked up to and hoped to see in our times of need have been abruptly taken from us. Our hearts go out to their families at home and their greater SAR family across the island as hopes fade for a rescue of the missing crew.

The crew of R116 were accompanying R118 from my local base on a CASEVAC 150Nm out into the Atlantic in the dead of night when their S-92 went missing. The people who do this work are consummate professionals. They are driven to serve and protect. They are some of the safest operators I've ever seen and yet they face risk daily. They face it every time they fly - be it an exercise with the RNLI or night time deck training offshore and they certainly face it when on a mission, when every last inch of wriggle room will be taken up to secure a casualty against the odds. They are faced with the possibility that any flight can go wrong and yet they work through it and keep flying. They do it day and night, fair and foul, 365 days a year. To protect us.

RIP Captain Dara Fitzpatrick.

I am still lost for words with this one - Such a shock to hear of a CG helicopter going down helping others, on what seemed to be a routine incident.

Thoughts are with everyone's family, and the rest of the CG teams!

A dark day for the emergency services but one that will in no way deter those who seek only to help others.

Dreadfull news. There have been very recent issues with the S92. Mandatory inspections on the tail rotor input shaft and other issues. They werent grounded but not far off.
Thoughts to family and colleagues.lets hope they recover the crew and craft fast and gain an understanding of what exactly went so dreadfully wrong.

Just back from a very sad wreath laying ceremony to mark the 1st Anniversary of the tragic loss of R116.
The following article recently published by the Irish Times may be of interest to some.
