Looking for some input for a used RIB

Hi

Short story, i am looking for a RIB for inshore crusing around where i live,

I spotted this boat , the price seems right and avon seems a great compagny,

Can any body who know well rib tell me what sort of handling this boat will give me and if the price is right, also what i should look in person ?

I plan to fit a 30HP yamaha 2 stroke on the back. Ive also spotted a 25HP mercury 2006, but my logic tell me a 3
Cylinder should run smoother than the mercury 2 cylinder?

30 hp will be dangerous on that and the 25 not much better with the tiller, i wouldnt even put the 25 on without it either. Forget 3 cylinder engines, boat is far too small for that type of worry.

The engine that is on there is perfect, leave it on there if it runs well and enjoy.

Don't know the price but others can help better than me with that.

The price is 1000 cad without engine and trailer. I already have a trailer so that fine for me, i could get it for 800$ maybe.

The transom is rated for 137 lbs i think and the mercury 2 stroke 25 hp weight 112 lbs, you really think it will be that dangerous ?

Thanks

Your profile says you are in the UK. Is that right? because that boat isn't.
I wouldn't be putting a 30HP on a boat rated for 18. What sort of "inshore" do you mean? that means different things to different people - but do you need more than the boat is rated for?

Its difficult for anyone to describe on here how a boat will handle as it depends on the operator, the weather and the fetch etc. However as 3.4m ribs go it is probably amongst the best. But another 0.5m of length would be better if you really care about sea keeping...

Looking for some input for a used RIB

Well i am located in canada no idea why it say UK

The boat will be primary used in the saguenay river. There is 1000ft deep water there so sometime with wind there some good waves.

I guess i am better to find a 4M rib

There are four factors in the rating to consider:

1. Is the transom strong enough for the weight? Sounds like you've got this under control.
2. Is the transom strong enough for the thrust of the engine? Presumably 25HP is fine from the plate.
3. Will the power be too fast for the boat and cause a speed wobble known as a chine walk? Experience determines this - don't discount it though. Loading can exacerbate it too.
4. Will the bigger engine have too much weight at the back meaning the bow points to the sky? Avon have helpfully pointed out that they suggest different engine sizes with tiller and remote steering.

There is quite a bit of information on the plate, and Avon are a reputable company - I certainly wouldn't assume they've plucked their answers out of nowhere [some less reputable brands may do this!] - so I'd lean towards their design spec.

Not necessarily, that will be better than some 4m boats. When you look at 4m boats then 5m ones seem better etc... if the price is right and you can use it on good days you can build some experience and will know if you trial a different boat if it really is better.

RIBase
its rated 18 hp on the tiller for weight didtribution if your sticking a console in it put a 25 hp on it just be sensible when you go out sea state wise, room will be an issue if you fit a console.
its got a good load carring capability too i would stick a tiller 20 hp on if it were mine but thats me.
looks a nice tidy boat from the pic good luck if you purchase.

A 30hp on a boat rated to 25hp isn't necessarily dangerous that's determined by the user.
I assume you would be fitting a console steering system if going for the bigger engines? Probably not a good idea Without A console though
The 3 cylinder yam is bang on the weight limit for the boat so transom should be OK.
Where you may run into problems is with insurance as insurers usually won't insure over the rated max.
If you just want the extra smoothness of the 3 cylinder and your going to install a console & your not going to drive it to the max I'd say you will be fine
Boats with tiller engines are a totally different animal so I wouldn't go with overpowering it if your sticking with a tiller engine
Only my opinion of course

When I had an Avon inflatable S400, a friend of ours had the 10'6" model with the red fitted bow dodger and screen. That was rated for 25hp providing it was fitted with cross tube steering - it was more than capable and performed like the proverbial!
In the 70s/80s we had inflatable seat/backrest so you were sat in it like a sports car.
Either use cross tube steering or fit a console and put the 25 on it and enjoy!
Very capable boat.

We have a 3.40 with 25hp mariner 2 stroke centre console rigged. Later model and even with weight more central eight distribution has a tendency to tail stand with tiller it would be awful without ballast up front (sometimes hard to find volunteers) will make a nice little rig and $800 CAD is cheap
