Looking for a Job!

I'm being made redundant in a few weeks time and I'm probably going to start my own business restoring RIBs...

But I just thought I would check to see if anyone knows of any good jobs out there in the Marine Trade. It's a long shot as I live in Swindon and can't really move.

Sorry to hear that whisper. Happened to me about 13 years ago and at the time is was very worrying. Good to hear that you are thinking about using it as an opportunity to set up a marine business, best of luck with it and shout if any of us can help in any way.

it's not an easy adjustment cos the money comes in when it comes in as opposed to every month so you have to careful with your settlement/standing orders etc.

I took voluntary redundancy cos I was tired of wearing a whistle. It worked for me it took me about three years to get back to the earning capacity I had in the real world and about 5 to surpass it..

I kinda miss the company car allowance and BUPA but apart from that I m very happy and a lot freer

I was made redundant in 1991 when the mines closed, started up on my own & never looked back. I'm probably "unemployable" now, as I'm used to taking holidays, time off etc. when I want & not having to grovel for it. As RW says, just get used to the irregular cash flow, it's either feast or famine.

I don't know what you did and it seems we all have a redundancy story . I did 27 years with tesco and similar to others had decent salary , final salary pension and a company car etc .
I took redundancy five years ago it was a decision that frightened the s**t out of me to make , family and all that . But once I had made it I never looked back . PD comments about being unemployable are spot on if you make it work you will never work for anyone else .

my tip would be plan to survive with very little salary from whatever business you set up . You need to be able to price with confidence and be prepared to re invest for a few years . like other comments made I am only just getting back to my old income . Being your own boss is a fantastic feeling .

I don't know anything about the boat industry but owning one in derbyshire makes it difficult to get things done on it . I don't know how practical a mobile boat repair business might be .

Mobile engine servicing would work. Problems to overcome would be:

1. How to ensure you don't spill any oil on the customers drive.
2. Noise, the neighbours may not like you starting it up in the street to check it still pumps water
3. Not sure what qualifications are needed to make sure your servicing meets the manufacturers warranty requirements

Lots of boats are kept many miles from the sea and towed, and it's almost impossible to find a local place to service engines. Definitely a market there.

I occasionally allowed myself a smug grin . Although there hasn't been any calls pleading for my return ...
one of the main reasons for stopping with the company was the shares I projected to get , so without any great skill turned out to be the right move

I've certainly known people who give up work and turn their hobby into a job and loved it. But I've also known people who say it turns their hobby into a chore. Right now you post pictures and a write up from RB2014 and everyone is all "Wow thats great" but think of the grief HMS gets. Are you ready to post something about your venture and some p***d off terwart comes on and starts slagging off whispy's bad workmanship etc. Suddenly things that people said WOW about become not up to scratch because someone else is handing over the gold coins for it. If that happened in normal work you switch it off and chill out on the RiB... ...not so easy when the RIB is the work!

Did think of buying a pub . But for that very reason didn't . That and becoming an alcoholic

As Neil says, sorry / glad to hear the news, depending on whether this something you wanted.

I guess the real question is whether you want to work for yourself, or not.

If you do, then I'd say key is having a sound vision and practical business plan - it might time to reap the benefits, but you'll have a good foundation.

As long it's just not a man-cave you're after!

Knowing you, whatever you turn your hand to will be a success

There is a chap in Skipton who does mobile marine servicing and seems to do quite well. He takes the call to find out serial numbers, orders the service kits and its job done at your own place. Have heard reasonable things. I think for credibility you would need to be time served and it goes without saying that the job has to be 100%. However there are always downsides. I had a chap once came in for an impeller, but he had not winterised the engine and had stored it upside down. He asked me to take it apart to find out what parts he required. I didn't charge him (friend of a friend). By the time I had finished he needed big and little ends, crank polish, exhaust baffle rotted out, an impeller and powerhead gasket kit. Then he had the nerve to say, "it was running when I brought it in". What happened? Answer - you happened!
