"longest ever unassisted RIB crossing?"

Lifted this from IBI news (marine industry trade paper):

"It has been confirmed that the recent Atlantic Challenge 1000 - three 7.5 metre Mercury MerCruiser powered RIBs crossing the ocean from Portugal to the Azores - will be entered in the Guinness Book of Records. It is the longest-ever unassisted ocean crossing by rigid-inflatable craft.

The Valiant Patrol 750SD RIBs with MerCruiser D4.2L D-Tronic diesels operating through Bravo Three twin-propeller drives completed the 1,000 nautical miles in 46 hours, 56 minutes and 55 seconds, an average speed of 22 knots per hour.

The non-stop, no refuelling, night and day journey was completed without serious incident."

Errrm am I missing something here? Doesn't Alan Priddy hold this record by a much larger margin?!

Comments? Alan P?!!

The truth is that anyone can get into the Guiness book of records Anything from stuffing maggots up your nose to eating S**t.

This entry proves that it is a comic rather than the official book of records that it origanaly was set up for and as a rule we do not bother with it. But you are right, they are only boys at the game.

For the record The longest unassisted trip by RIB is.........
(And we have the official world record documentation to prove it)

The Spirit of Cardiff, powered by a Yamaha ME 240 i Deisel engine
And built by Offshore Expeditions.

Horta (Azores) to Lizard Point UK 1234.8 Nautical miles @ an average speed of 24.6 knots day and night with no problems apart from Jan eating all the food that was left on board!

Perhaps you should contact the officials and tell them that they are not in possesion of the real records and should contact the UIM before they print such slandeous statements!

Ah yes but this was recognised by.......

the Portuguese Nautical Motor Sport Federation (FPM) so it must be kosher!!

More details on http://www.valiant-boats.com/news.htm

Makes interesting reading and I am certainly not belittling their achievement.

It has me started thinking of records that are perhaps within the grasp of us mere mortals. The fastest circumnavigation of Canvey Island is I think well within our capabilities!

So it looks like the press release was a little ambiguous -- it's till a record, but a national one, not a world record!

Ah, but it now all changes! we have all forgoten about Edna O'Coinan who part motored, part sailed across from St John's to Ireland in a 17ft humber. Surely he holds the record.

And now the truth emerges! Having looked at and studied their story on the Valiant web site it would appear that they only traveled 893 nautical miles, so I do not know where the Atlantic 1000 came from!

We have written to the Guiness Book of records asking them to correct there entry and pointed out that they should investigate what they are told!

I really do wonder about these so called reference books. I recently saw that the 'Readers Digest Book of FACTS' stated that twins have identical fingerprints. This is absolute nonsense. Twins have identical DNA but their fingerprints are different. You would think that they would check their facts. Having seen such a glarring error that I knew about, it makes you wonder what other rubbish they have printed as so-called fac!

Go get 'em Alan...

Regards

Keith Hart

You're older than I thought Keith...or you recently paid a visit to the dentists.... they are the only place readers digest books are found now aren't they..

Alan P...

Those sort of distances must be like sitting on a fuel barge. What's the burn rate on Spirit like?

We burn 1.68 litres per nautical mile and carry 3000 litres of fuel.

Spirit of Cardiff was designed as a "floating fuel Tank" to citcumnavigate the world.

Cheers
