Life Jacket Alert - check your cylinders!

We've (probably) all heard the horror stories about defective lifejackets with loose or missing CO2 cylinders etc.

I had a professional check my Crewsaver Ergofit 290s today before their return to duty. They were new last year and to my eternal shame, I didn't check them then - well, they were top of the range and new?

In both of my pair, the CO2 cylinders were loose. One was only finger tight and the other was barely retained - a failure had it been fired.

If you haven't already - open your jackets and check the CO2 cylinder fitting, mechanism dates and general condition!

Good advice . I started sending my life vests for regular service .
Just got my crewsafer back after maintenance .
My cylinder was replaced due to corrosion .

What annoys me most is me. I KNEW that new LJs often arrive with loose cylinders as I'd read reports previously - I'd simply forgotten! The service center find regular defects on new LJs in regard to CO2 cylinders - some not even attached and lying loose inside the bladder. It's not confined to Crewsaver in case anyone gets that impression - it's just a thing with new LJs - possibly due to fresh slippy plastics and protective finishes not mating well.

FYI these are not my "work" jackets and fall outside my coding. The main jackets are of Estonian origin and are Redbay branded. They get serviced every year and certified as such. No failures or defects over five seasons!

No? That would be like delivering cars with their brakes disconnected in case they seized in transit. No, it's just a thing - very common and worth checking annually, even if the jacket isn't being serviced.

To paraphrase Mark Twain, "Rumours of my Sixtyness are greatly exaggerated"

Don't forget to check your CO2 cylinders.

Fair enough - those of us in early reaches of the penultimate decade to sixtyish can exhibit an unpleasant snippiness that is best avoided.
