Launching On Dry Land!!!!!!

Hi Guys

I need to give my trailer a service and would prefer to do this without the RIB on it, What is the best method of removing the boat onto "Dry Land" ?

you can roll if off onto a block then prop it up with blocks etc as you see yachts proped. Best way is to walk the trailer forward and prop the back as you go. Easy if you have lots of help!!

we have 6 boats and three trailers so we are always swapping em over!

First it really helps if you have a roller coaster trailer it's not essential but much nicer.

Position Boatie in the place where you want it to rest and place a tyre or 25 l plastic liquid container underneath the stern area as close to the back of the trailer as you can. the trailer will be staying put and the boat will slide off the back of the trailer.

The trailer is still attached to the car and the car has it's handbrake on.

Take the winch strap and extend the strap fully then run it underneath the boat and wrap it around a chassis beam and return it to the u bolt on the bow.

Start winching the strap in , this will then start to pull the boat off the trailer in a controlled and steady manner. Be cautious to keep a painter attached to the trailer so the boat will not rise up too much in the air when the boat is coming off the trailer. As more of the boat comes off the trailer stuff more tyres containers underneath the boat

Cos I am Billy No Mates i often have to do this on my own and the biggest I have got off a trailer is a 2 ton 7.8 mtr boat. There is another quicker way but this is the one I prefer

when half the boat is off the trailer consider moving the car forward!

This seems very good advice indeed Stuart - would you attempt this with an 8.75 Scorpion Sportscruiser? Also, what are the practicalities of getting it back on, without waiting for global warming causing an unusually high tide ...

I once helped stuart take a RIB of about 6 or 7m off a trailer ouside his unit.

With two people it worked like this.

Trailer and boat where you want the boat to end up.

Attach a line from the Transom to a fixed point. In this case it was my towbar.

With the boat unattached from the trailer, the trailer is pulled forward slowly by tow vehicle.

As the stern comes off the trailer then a shaped block/rest/old tyre can be placed underneath followed up by one or two more as the trailer moves forward.

I will admit I was scared stiff, but with a helper to place the rests (Me) this turned out to be a very controlled method. The winch can be used to re-mount the boat, which will be easier the higher its been chocked up in the first place.

For a smaller RIB I used to just lift the front of the trailer, let the transom back onto the garden with the winch then pull the trailer out carefully whilst a helper steadied the boat.

I did this with my 4.1m a couple of weeks ago; tied the stern to one car, and the trailer to another. Attached the winch strap to my car, and slowly winched the trailer from under the boat. Becasue the strap is attached to the car the nose doesnt rise up much. If you have a bigger boat put the brakes on/chock the wheels as you go.

Thank you, most of my advice is!

re your questions then Yes I would do it to any boat and you wont need any Global warming to put it back on. . We have done it with our 4 ton Avon 8.4 It's a bit slower but happens just the same I imagine the Scorpion is a bit lighter!

If I could afford a Scorpion Sportscruiser then I'd would be wasting my time doing this I'd be paying somebody with a crane to do it for me!

We needed to do some little repair on the trailer, so after reading this thread and spending a long time thinking how to do it, we decided a crane was definatly the easiest way.

1. Thats a handy place to have access to
2. Lifted the stern about 2 inches off the trailer and rolled it backwards untill the stern was above the tressles.
3. Make sure the tressles are in the right position and lower it down.
4. Lift the bow and pull the trailer away from under it
5. Lower the bow down onto tressle no. 3

Wasn't as difficult as we thought it would be

Hi Fred

I can confirm the easy way is keep the boat still and move the trailer ( as per Rogue Wave)
A couple of carpenters tressles stop it falling over.
By the time I did it for the second time it was a 20 minute job.
Getting the boat to start to move can be tricky - so tie the transom eyes
tp something inline behind and leave a little slack in the winch strop. Move the trailer forward until the winch strop is tight. put some move slack in the winch strop and move the trailer again.
Once the transom is on your wooden block, (assuming you are on level ground) leave the handbrake off and slowly unwind the winch.
