Launching my 6.3 with a Motor Home

Anyone launch with a motor home?

Do you think I would launch my 6.3 Humber with your average 6 berth fiat/transit based unit?

Jono

Well Jono, I have been known to dunk and retrieve our 6.3 OP from Lamlash slip using the Transit SWB - no problems so far even on our shallow but Teflon-coated slip, so if your mobile roadblock has more weight over the axles than an empty van you should be OK.

Then again, if a camper van was dragged backwards into the oggin I don't think it'd be any great loss.

Same as launching with any 2WD truck, except that seeing the trailer while backing may be problematic.

Watch ground clearance, especially if the ramp is a steep one; as the rear wheels drop off, you may scrape stuff underneath.

Some motor homes have quite large rear overhangs so maybe a problem on some slips have a look at this extreme example http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?im...%3D54%26um%3D1 and scroll half way down the page you could end up with the towball 3 feet off the ground and the stern on the slip!!! But it's a great idea especially for retirees when tenting becomes too hard beware of the local dealer "Carl the campervan cowboy"

I'd imagine a few 'tests' would be a good idea .. apart from delighting a slipway audience with your capers .. youve gone a got your bunk wet too if it all goes tits up

I believe Hugh Jardon, lately of this parish used to do just this. I believe he had a selection of lines made up so that he could drop the traile well behind the motor home.

Might be worth seeing if a PM to him works!

RIBase
Apart from the fact it looks like your launching your boat using a National Express coach, you can always launch and recover with ropes, especially if the slip looks green or appears too steep.

Errr, did you ever seen him 'in action'? A little bird told me his motorhome was as shit scared of the sea as he was......

Don't know whether he ever put them to use:

Why not just bolt an outboard on the back 'TopGear' style . Job done ? I bet you have a reversing camera too so you can see what you are about to reverse into ?

Been using my vans to launch for years, MK5 SWB80 and now a MK6 MWB280, no problems just have to be a bit more wary on some slips and use a longer rope. Great changing room aswell!
