Launch help

Hoping to go to Shell Island next weekend for the 1st time, never been here before, with a couple or more other Ribsters, I cant get boat launch to work on this Darn thing at the moment, just wondered, has any one on here launched from Shell island before? If so - can you give any info or advice, if you think it's a NO GO, Any other suggestions in this part of the country, bairing in mind, one of the ribbers coming along is completley new to ribbing, & needs a bit assurance that he's well spent his inheritance.(Heh heh!) Any one wishing to join us you'll be very welcome, (we've got A LAND ROVER full of duty free Beer & vodka)!!!!! HIC!!

Boggy.

Shell Island Yacht Club, Llanbedr

Boggy,

Never used that slip but I've just looked on Boat Launch for you. This is what it says about Shell Island:

Slipway information:

Ramp Description: Moderate gradient on the slipway. Access is restricted to high tide so check the tide times before setting out.
Ramp Type: Concrete
Upper Area: Sand
Lower Area: Sand
Suitability: Small trailer can be pushed
Ramp Length: 1/4 tidal
Facilities: Overnight parking available. Part of Shell facilities. Slip water tap available.
Charges: None
Cruising Area: Cardigan Bay
Jetski Friendly: Unknown

Good luck with it. I'd be up for joining you, but I have no engine.
There are several decent places to launch on Anglesey, but I guess you knew that already!

Tim

Boggy,

I've never used Shell Island - so I can't comment on the slip there. We are also heading for Neaps this weekend, so most of the slipways round here are going to be limited (until you get to Pwllheli).

However, there are some caravan/camp sites between Shell Island and Barmouth that launch off the beach, one is Caerdaniel (there are at least two 7m Ospreys that launch from there) - so you could possibly stay there?

Alternately there is Barmouth Harbour. The slip is also only accessible around High tide, but if you are comfortable recovering on the beach within the harbour, then you can do that there.

You could launch Friday afternoon, and put it on a mooring in the harbour for the weekend. There are several not being used at the moment!! You may be able to do the same up at Shell Island.

Your best bet would be to talk to the Harbour Master at Barmouth (Glyn) or his assistant (Asa) on 01341 280671.

Hope this helps!!

D...

P.S. You also need to be registered with Gwynedd Council to launch - need to show proof of insurance etc. Ignore this if you already know......!!

Hi Boggy,

If the weather is decent you'll see us going up and down past Caerdaniel doing RIB Rides out of Barmouth this weekend - I'll keep an eye out for you!!

What colour is your RIB?

Cheers,

Dylan...

Yep thats the plan for the next weekend, funny you should say that but we are actually planning on going to porthmadog, we are looking to book somewhere soon, can you suggest a good place?
we usually always pop over to anglesey, but this year we thought we would change the plan & visit the rest of our Welsh coast line, we think we may be missing out on lots of other beautiful beachs & coast lines!!

Last went to Shell Island when I was a kid. I remember that the road onto the island gets covered by the tide and so you cant always get on and off.

Its also only just an island, a stream I think completes its issolation.

Cheers for the offer Boggy (I think is was an open offer). I'd love to come over for a trip out, I've been shorebound since October.
I'm working all weekend so won't be able to join you. Get the new engine next week though!
