Such a " fundamental " error does make you wonder what other horrors are beneath the shiny exterior though ?

It does make you wonder, if as a few people are suggesting the nuts just came loose how would it have fared if they had been in the other way around?
I always used to put the bolts through the engine with the nuts inside the boat but that seems to be the "wrong way".
If those bolts did indeed just work loose and didnt snap then had the bolts been the other way round the problem may have been noticed before it actually fell off.

Have a look at the video at approx 9.25 to 9.35.

Bolts on that engine should all be outside in (nuts on inside).

In the UK it would be supplied with a 6 bolt kit, and double nuts (nyloc & additional lock nut).

IMO bolts wrong way round the engine danced off the bolts the other way round the sealed bolts would have helped more than just the nuts coming off plus looking at the stern there would be a possibility of seeing them come undone not so if you have to look over the stern. last point all my bolts have lock nuts on up to flat washers i wouldn't expect anything else.

That is my thoughts I've always fitted bolts from outside in for the reasons you give. I'm sure there was a thread on here a little while ago and the general opinion was that was the wrong way round and bolts should be from inside out

on my suzuki book it states inside out for the bolts but dosnt state it should only be that way which then leads me to some outboard locks fit over the bolt which would be on the nut side for obvious reasons which then puts it in the salt water splash zone on the engine not good for the lock, i prefer mine outside in but doesn't affect it in anyway only for the reason of the bolt has to come all the way out, i drill mine tight so a force fit which has to help IMO

The Suzuki rigging manual says lock nuts on the outside.

Reminds me of an old sailing quote..."If you haven't been aground you haven't been around"....Boyd's badass! He cut that Merc loose like it was bubble gum on his shoe! I Love all the moron haters comments. They're just jealous they can't dump a brand new motor and still have a smile on their face. I'll put money on it that Boyd didn't bolt that motor on, he just dealt with it.

I think he was putting a very forced brave face on it as he knew he was going to be on YouTube. No one I know wouldn’t have sworn at the loss of the engine, the risk of damage to the second engine and above all what sort of idiot had fitted an engine that fell of in a moderate sea, albeit being driven hard. The use of PFDs and kill cords was unimpressive too. Ithoight he was going to incinerate them all when he went to cut the cable tube to the lost engine. Petrol pipe plus battery cables....... .Luckily the motormouth commentator went for the battery isolator!

Kiwiboyd's Mercury Bolts fail (initial assessment)

33’ boat in 1’-2’ chop?; Pretty common for no pfd on adults unless there’s an emergency. Obviously a rigging failure, but not a helmsmen or skipper issue; he crushed it!

I agree with comments no excuse for no lifejackets.

On the bolts in out vs out in - perhaps it’s just aesthetics?

Moron haters? Try watching it again with your glasses on.

Also slightly over the top I thought.

Engineering wise the nut should pull, in this case the engine in so nuts outside I just prefer nuts in.

The video maker goes to the workshop and if it’s possible, is even more irritating. I’m liking the owner a lot more as he ponies up and frankly admits they mismatched the nuts and bolts.

The garrulous moron tells him about the girl freaking out when he arrived. He got that the wrong way round. Finally he leaves “for the fifteenth time” having secured support for salvaging the engine for himself. Generally salvage rights apply to whomever lifts it first...... [emoji39]
