We now fix the K/C to our lifejackets works for us as we have tiller steer & the lifejackets have a front pocket for the cord to go in when not in use ,
before that we had it just looped around the wrist
worked ok but can be a pain if wanting to swap hands when steering
Now having it fastened to the jacket leaves both hands free but in a small boat the cord can get caught around the knee pulling it out as my lad keeps doing .

On a small tiller steered boat I put the kill cord round my ankle. There's no way it's going to slip over my foot, and it keeps it out of the way.
