Keeping a rib in Scotland

All,

I have recently moved to Aberdeen from Alderney and am after any info on where i can keep my rib. I would like a spot on the west coast as the east side (Aberdeen) is pretty featureless. Somewhere that has a nice cruising ground, islands etc !!

The rib is a 32ft Scorpion sportscruiser and it will not be used that often so i would like to keep it on a trailer rather than in the water.

Any recommendations ??

Failing this, does anyone want to buy it ?? Otherwise it will be sitting on the hard landing in Alderney for a couple of years until i return which would be a shame.

Rather than sell her, have you thought about "Boat Share". This may be a way of you keeping the boat, getting use of her when time permits but having a partner able and willing to maintain her etc. Just a thought.

Bl**dy hell thats quite a difference! I hope you have plenty of thermals as Aberdeen is the coldest place I've ever visited. (One new years eve many moons ago.) I mean that I've been to places where the actual temp was lower but the coldest I have ever felt was in Aberdeen!

In terms of where to keep Seahound on the West Coast howabout Kip Marina at Inverkip. An hour or so from Glasgae on the Firth of Clyde and they seem to have plenty of hardstanding space.

The other thing that might be of interest is that I seem to recall a story in one of the boating mags about a former navy base somewhere on the Clyde that was being developed into a dryboating facility. If I can dig out the article I'll let you know.

West Coast of Scotland is a fantastic cruising ground, best in Europe IMHO so enjoy!

You could keep in Kip Marina at Inverkip which is about 30 mins from Glasgow. There are quite a few people from the Aberdeen area that keep their boats there. You could also have hardstanding at Fairlie Quay, which Kip own, its the old Navy Base which again is about 30 mins from Glasgow (down the back road) or at Largs there is another Marina called Largs Yacht Haven and they will launch and recover your boat for you.
Largs is also the only Marina in the 3 that has petrol on site.

Thanks for the info.

Looks like Kip mariner/largs is the place to go.

I used to go boating in flip flops and shorts so having to get some thermals on to go in the boat is a little depressing. Looking forward to the new stomping ground though, even if it is only for a couple of years.

If you're travelling from Aberdeen, why not try marinas in the Oban area - Dunstaffnage for example. This would give you immediate access to the Western Isles.

There is a very informative booklet called 'Sail Scotland' which lists all the boating facilities in Scotland. I think you can get it through sailscotland.co.uk

yep it is depressing. Lucky i put the Ficht on instead of the 300 promax i used to have.

Mind you a boat on Alderney is essential part of everyday life. In Scotland it is just a luxury. Thats if you call freezing your arse of in a gale and the rain (and thats in summer) a luxury. !!

Craobh Marina is a great place for ribs. Acces is easy to the islands and there's great places to eat and explore. Corryvreckan and CUan Sound are spectacular. Jim Berry will look after you very well and give a hard storage rate.

How about Inverness?

Aberdeen to Inverness is about 110 miles (Aberdeen to Inverkip is 180 miles).

You then have access to the Beauly Firth, Moray Firth, Cromarty Firth, the rugged coastline of Caithness you could even make Orkney in a day. You can go through the Caledonian Canal into Loch Ness and through to the West Coast.

I store my boat over the winter at a place which is around 15 miles on the Aberdeen side of Inverness. It is undercover and I thought very cheap at £35/month! May be a bit far for you (80ish miles from Aberdeen) but if you were heading to the west coast anyway it would be fine. If you want more details then just let me know
