Since Beckham bought one the prices have gone through the roof. Stupid really

Shame as I used to have one. Sold it for £1500 before he made them fashionable.

No I think that they're "@" things. like "@gotchiguy".

hash tags are, I believe, used for things that are "trending". For example at the start of many television programs now there is a box with a hash tag, eg "#thismorning" which people must include in their tweets if they are talking about the show. This means (again, I think, I don't use any of this nonsense) that it is put into a list which the people at this morning can read and decide which ones to read out.

The most successful application of this I have seen is during a show where they say "tweet us during the show with hash tag blah di blah" then during the show the audience can tweet them and it comes to the attention of the people doing it. Heckling anonymously if you like...

Tweeting is for old people as far as I am concerned so I have very little interest but it is an unfortunate fact that you tend to pick these things up

Ok I've just read this and I think I've got it:

The Twitter Hash Tag: What Is It and How Do You Use It?

It's a way of marking works in your text with a # if they could make a meaningful search for someone, so the person doing the search will only get the #searider as results instead of every time a searider is mentioned on here.

I can see a reason for using them but it's a bit late for me to see how useful they could be one here.....

OK 2 votes for then!

We do already support "tags" these are labels (or in the old days we might have called them "key words" that you can attach to a thread (not at post level) that will help people find the thread when searching. Some of you may have noticed the "tag cloud" on some pages over on the right - the bigger the word the more it has been used as a tag - clicking the tags brings up threads with that tag.

I think the tags can only be set by the OP when creating a thread.

I'll tag this as #needtobequicker as an example! Note the # is not needed outside twitter and spaces are to be encouraged.

All of what you said is correct. That is how they are intended to be used.

So you can go on twitter an search for #gopro and get anything anyone has tagged. @'s are used for usernames which are better used for a convesation where you need to be clear who you are replying to.

However, tweeters tend to make statements with them like #ineedtotweetless which is actually not a likely search term...
