Insurance how far out?

We are thinking of planning some more ambitious trips out to wrecks that are 15 - 30 Nm off shore, one issue is insurance ours doesnt cover that far, what do fora members do if they want to go these distances? St Kilda was featured in RIB Intl once I think? That is fair step.

Simon I questioned this with our insurance co before i sent this years money off to them as we are coverd for 12 miles out. They said it would depend on the location going to but there was scope on the policy for some longer trips (example used holidays etc) and i would just need to call and let them know the period/location. I would give your current co a ring. I did not take it further like getting confirmed in the policy as now not got planes for any distance trips this year.

I chivvied them about that and they said I am covered travelling between parts of the UK. Crossing from a headland to a headland rather than following the coast is fine. They added on cover for Eire at no extra cost but I had to ask.

Give them a wee ring and check.

With St Kilda, it's about 40miles nearest so 20mls each side would do it...just.

But then whats the possibility of something going wrong 20+ miles out (outside uk territorial waters) that is not likely to happen 12 miles out? How do insurance companies foresee the extra risk?

They don't - they just like another opportunity to either
a - charge you a higher premium
or
b - wriggle out of a claim because you were 1/10 mile over the line

Just out of interest - where are the wrecks you are considering travelling to.

But wouldnt you be covered going to St Kilda anyway. Isnt it part of the UK

My insurance says :-

Water within a twelve mile limit of the coastline.
This will also include the passage between two points within the United Kingdom or within Ireland by the most direct route, even though this may take the vessel outside the twelve mile limit, but excluding passages between Great Britain, Ireland and the Channel Islands unless specifically agreed by us in writing.

So it expicitly exludes me from breaking the 12m limit to go from the uk to ireland or the chanel islands but not any other islands that form part of the UK.

If you want coverage for a cruising area outside the 12-mile limit, why don't you just ask your insurance company for it?

If they have a problem with agreeing it, do as JK says and vote with your feet.

We pay very little extra for full Brest-Elbe coverage. One insurance company offered it for nothing last year.

You should be able to 'phone up your insurance broker and add risks to your policy as and when required. If they don't offer this flexibility, don't offer them your business.

We us Colin Curtis Marine in Plymouth and every risk we have ever asked for has been added to the policy at very modest cost. http://www.curtismarine.co.uk

Euromarine are also very good at tailoring a policy to your requirements http://www.euromarine-ltd.com and Porthcawl offer a good service to RIB owners http://www.porthcawl-insurance.co.uk

hmm, the Gunners used to recon about 22 miles from Benbecula, but the Royal Artillery (drop shorts and grid square removal services) don't have the best reputation for accuracy, perhaps Aging Youth could comment. Sadly the weather closed in on us and we only made it half way to the small group of islands and dived there rather than the underwater caves and ravines of St Kilda.

Yeh, I wasn't very clear on that. I was suggesting the distance of 20 + 20 miles each way as a work around if his insurance company didn't accept the more than 20mls coastal or the place to place in the UK.

Aye, there's a lot of drink taken in Benbecula.

From memory, I think St Kilda is about 40 miles from the most westerly point of North Uist. You wouldn't be launching from there of course. My trips have left from the top of North Uist close to the Sound of Harris. The distance to Hirta is 48 miles and it's a few degrees south of west from there.

Thanks chaps, the wrecks that had been mentioned were 30 miles out into the north sea, I dont know their names yet as it wasnt me looking at them, will find out though. That far and we'd need to going out there in a flotilla.

Visited South Uist and Benbecula on a long summer project once with school, very fond memories of it, truly beautiful, we collected some interesting Ex Mod missile debris!
