Injury while out on your rib

To day I was on clew bay for a few hours. Wind over tide which provided very rough seas. I was running against a head sea and miss calculated a smallish wave and as a result I knocked a snap from my lower back. I am asking has many members caused injury while ribbing?

Note. I have a shock mitigation seat which works well but the wave in question still managed to injury me. The seating worked very well crossing the Dornish bar in wind over tide both yesterday and today. The waves here we're large steep and at a very short wavelength ie close together.

I've hurt my back many times when out on the rib, it's the constant jarring motion of slamming down after the crest of a wave. The worst thing I did was in the harbour on it's mooring. I was leaning over the back bench looking for something and I had my rib across the top of the bench, I simply heard a crack and an awful pain shot across my chest. I had to lay myself down on one of the tubes and I exclaimed something along the lines of "Golly gosh that hurt". I remained in pain for about 6 weeks, it was just starting to get better when I got kicked in the ribs during a Taekwondo session and it was another 5-6 weeks until that stopped hurting also.

I obviously cracked a rib but didn't go to the doctors as there is little they could have done anyway other than tell me to rest it.

I recently landed on my ahem left testicle coming down off a wave just squashed it between the seat and my leg.... bloody painful now wince every time I see a big one coming my way....might have to start wearring box....

Fell off mine in the driveway.

Broke my arm and knocked my two front teeth out when my face broke my fall on the paving slabs.

Anyway... teeth re-installed courtesy Forth Valley A&E and the arm's well knitted now but I'm bit more cautious jumping on and off the boat in the driveway.

Helming the boat this week while ringoing the kids, wife was on watch astern seated, hit a sharp wave, shock on her already fragile back and knocked her jaws together stopped her talking for a good half hour!

Father sat at bow, he said open her up, so I opened it up on to the plane, realised we were in the rolling wake of the Big boat we’d just been over the wash of... up, down, up, father airborn as we went down again as I throttled off, he lands in front, I crashed in to reverse, we go over him, hits the v hull on ribs, floats up at the side star shape. Panic, then he lifted head. All in shock, very scary, lessons learned. Lost his pipe he’d had since 21, he was 55 at the time, not happy.

Daughter when c.6 was thrwn off bench seat when i misjudged wash frm larch gin pallace that passed close, bit right throught her bottom lower lip...blood e erywhere. Luckily no damage to her teeth. Reinfirced decision to move to stronger boat with jockeys! Otherwise just the usual little things, small cuts and odd bruises from unplannned contact with hard surfaces. Trust this is not tempting fate.

Old man stepped off boat in to a black inflatable dinghy in the dark, it had deflated and just floating. It folded in half, wrapped him up and went under, VERY worrying for a few moments.

I too fell off my rib on the drive cracking a bone in my elbow which stopped me doing the 2017 Bardsey run!

It's a risk. I've fallen off a trailered RIB - doesn't take much imagination to see how it could go wrong. I know a man who fell off his RIB on a slipway and landed on his head. His pulse was lost multiple times before the ambulance arrived. He has plates in his noggin and is lucky to be alive.

I've had no issues at sea, but I've seen several injuries occur, some that ended in surgery. Personally I've pulled muscles and stained bits I didn't know I had. I had a "crew" medical a couple of years ago and had to strip for the physical. The doctor looked at me and asked in hushed tones - "where did you get those injuries bruises?"
I was like: Um, I was at sea, that's the deal!
He was like: Is there anything you want to tell me? Are you being hurt?

RIBs - well named...

If I had a quid for the number of times I have come millimetres away
from Face to Wheel in the rough stuff, I would have about 17 quid.
Lot to be said for the Gecko with visor down when it gets really lumpy.
Visor to Wheel doesn't smart as much!

I'm thinking.....it's best not to think you're safe just because you've made it into the harbour.

In fact, you were probably safer out there

Isn't there a statistic kicking around somewhere that says more yachties drown in harbours than at sea. Usually pissed & falling out of tenders in the dark.

I think so. A man died on the Strait last month after rowing out to his yacht on a mooring after being in the pub. Tragic.

I know a WAFI who got well pi55ed in Port Ellen. He had the yacht moored off in the bay. He rowed out to her and never made it. He was found asleep in the tender on a nearby beach the next day - still out of it.

Then there was the local chap who slipped getting into his tender from the yacht - found in the water, didn't survive.

Two people have tripped and died in the past ten years on my local slip.

I know of a bloke who fell out of a stationary RIB and died of hypothermia holding on to it.

Sh1t happens.

My injuries, nothing serious but have had;

1. sore knees and back after longish passage in heavy sea's
2. cuts to arm from getting stuff out of a locker and snagging on self tappers that protruded from fasteners securing seats and lockers (replaced about 30 with ss nuts and bolts)
3. sore back from pulling overley stuffed boat cover from locker

thats about it, luckily. touch wood

Saw Doggypaddle fall out of his 5.4 at Mylor. He didn't realise he'd broken his arm, then he got in a 1950s landy with no power steering and drove to Wales.

I had this with a Redbay 6.1 I had. The jockey seat was just too high (I’m 5’8) so I didn’t have enough bend in my legs to absorb. I used to end up banging off the hard seat. I’ve found XS and Tornados I’ve used have slightly lower seats and more forgiving.
