I'm on the RNLI Pentax Photo of the year 2008

You can just see me on the starboard quarter! (of the lifeboat that is)

New Quay Crew Member Hanna Nuuttila is the RNLI Pentax photographer of the year 2008, it has been announced at the London International Boat Show.

Hanna's winning image shows Pwllheli's Mersey class all-weather lifeboat coming to the aid of the sailing yacht Galasma in force 9 severe gales, high waves and poor visibility.

Now in its third year, the competition was developed to document the RNLI's rescue work. Entries were submitted by crew members and lifeguards from around the UK and RoI.

A new film-making category was added to the 2008 competition, as part of the RNLI's initiative to equip lifeboats with cameras that capture real-time film footage of rescues and training exercises. Barry Perrins, a crew member at Plymouth lifeboat station, won the top prize for his short film about why he gives up his time to volunteer.

The winning photo is on display at the RNLI's boat show stand until Sunday 18 January, along with the winners of the competition's sub-categories. The film is also being shown.

Hanna says: ‘I'm totally surprised to win, because my fellow crew mates in New Quay entered the image on my behalf! It's an honour to be recognised for the photo, but this award is really to be shared with all the crew who were out on the shout that day in very difficult conditions.'

Nah mate you must be getting your Port and Starboard mixed up - the Starboard quarter is higher, you would be on the lower side

Got to admit,

Theres a certain thrill to being out in heavy seas, with good crew and the right equipment beneath you, whether going to a shout or not.

But still, you don't realise exactly how rough it is until some bright spark brings along a camera.

As soon as they hit the beach they will drop a wire strop which is attached to the keel, the tractor will then attach and winch up the beach.

Sorry to take so long to reply.....I managed to get the rest of the pics thanks... the best one I think is you guys 'surfing' the lifeboat back into harbour on 15ft breakers !

It looked like some serious shit out there though... so glad and grateful you were there to fish them all out, I honestly don't think they would of made it back without you, and that would of been 3 members of my family...... true life savers !

I think a few of you are coming to the Llangwrog Sailing Dinner in Holyhead in August ?... rest assured who ever makes the trip will not be not be going home sober !!

I went for a play with the ramsgate RNLI on a training day last autumn - and got a few goodies. The idea was to produce portraits of the crew but for some reason the coxswain wanted them in shirt and tie - which looked rediculous in all honesty!

Personal favourite from the day was this one - if you'd like to see the whole lot you can see them at www.level11.co.uk/rnli - there's some quite good stuff with the Rib playing in the wash from the ALB
