Ignoring Transom hp rating?

I picked up my Ribtec at the weekend , and plan to give it a thrashing at the weekend. It has a 75hp motor fitted which has been given the all clear by samspeed marine.

I plan to upgrade the engine some time next year and wonder, as the ribtec 5.85 is only rated to 120hp how sensible would it be to over step that? I notice CJL's boat has a 135 optimax fitted, which would be my engine of choice.

Your insurance assessor might have something to say about it if you have an accident and have to claim?

Yep thats a major draw back, how about rubbing out the 3 on the engine cowl and sticking in a 1

Your mad the boat builder knows how strong it is and has put it there for a reason we had a cougar with a 225 Honda and the transom crack in four places when my wife was on her way to hamble. i understand that cougar have sorted this problem now but it just goes to show even though the boat was rated to take the engine it couldnt.

but if you have to put a bigger engine go for the biggest you can find and pay ribtec to reinforce the transom for a 150 yeeeha

Doesn't it also depend a lot on the weight of the engine?

Stay within the limits of the manufacturers recommended HP ratings, God forbid there was ever an accident, but if there was, and your insurer can't stick it on someone else - make no mistake, they'll come to stick it on you!

Tamper with such things at your peril!

When you think about the worst case senario it would be a bad idea, I guess if the insurer bailed out on you it would leave you exposed to unlimited losses
