It's a sign of the times Dave, got a bit of paper makes them professional, we were having this talk last night, someone wanted my CV, I told him I've never done one in my life, in my day it was give us a go and if you don't like what I do, I'll go, we were talking about foreign workers, which is funny cause I'm working in France, but I argued that doctors should take there exams in the country they are working in.

ICC used to be upto 24m by default and if you have this you will retain grand father rights on renewal but 5+ yrs ago (could be 10+??) there was a 10m category introduced for power and sail and the PB2 (quite correctly) only authorises upto 10m, a coastal skipper or similar is needed now for 10-24m authority.

Yup I know exactly where you're coming from. I have a pocket full of cards for work that proves my competency in various areas. Strangely, I can be competent one day, but the day after the card expires I'm classed as a danger to all and sundry. Funnily, all I have to do to prove that I'm still competent is send a new photo & shell out 30 quid & suddenly I'm competent again.
If the qualifications you need to obtain an ICC last a lifetime, why doesn't the ICC? or are we back to the photo & 50 again?

Exactly my thoughts..... although updating a photograph for a nominal fee every 10 years would be a good idea
