I know I shouldn't be buying new toys but.....

Stumbled across this ad which looks like quite a good deal, what does anyone think ? What questions would you ask the seller ? Also any experience of OMC's, tried searching it on here and all I can find is people looking for new props rather than actual reviews?

Reasons for waning to upgrade are - my other half is quite sociable so having 6 comfy seats rather than 2 would mean we could actually invite friends out, which means we'd use it a lot more; and hopefully being 10 years newer might mean things work a bit better, I don't think I've yet had a trip where there hasn't been something that could really do with being looked at. I'm not getting anywhere fast with learning how to do stuff myself and I'm starting to get a bit annoyed with it all.

I am a bit concerned about how much the whole lot weighs but I'm going to ask that question in the right place as soon as I've found & scanned the relevant page in my car handbook.

We had a Ribcraft 585. It was a superb sea boat and was well engineered and built. We had 150 on it, also OMC, a Ficht, and it flew.

Go for it!

The RC 585 is a realy good hull,and would certainly open up alot of options! Ribcraft are always worth a call too,they often get offered px's, used Ribs ect, which can be good value[Got mine that way,with only 40 hrs on her]...speak to Dorian whatever you decide on, the best of luck!

That's a good hull, but I reckon it's somewhat overpriced with that lump on it.

Or to put it another way, you might get £1500 for the engine if you're very very lucky. Is the rest of the package worth £8500?

That's not a very sociable seating arrangement for a boat to take friends out on.

If you've decided on an upgrade, I'd advise holding tight. There will be more to choose from over the winter at the right money.

Hmm thats sort of the question... probably would want to change the engine fairly soon - well, next year. He said OMC is the military arm of Johnson/Evinrude, they just 'soup them up a bit and paint them green'.

It hasn't been used for 2 years (but has been kept under cover, and was serviced & winterised after last use) but he would check it runs and look into getting it serviced prior to sale. It's not perfect (I was hoping for a pretty one next - still looks a bit too Rescue-y!), might go and have a look though, dunno.

OMC= Outboard Motor Corporation, which was the company that owned the Johnson & Evinrood brands. OMC were bought out by Bombardier, then later traded under the BRP banner, still using the names Evinrood & Johnson for their outboards.

The 'paint them green' bit was right.

AFAIK, there was no soup involved.

Have you had many hours experience on a 585? Yours is a 545 isn't it?

Been on a few of 585's,one in a' Force 6' off Plymouth sound,very impressed, although I would suggest 130-150 horses! My' 545' [1''narrower if memeorey serves] has side by side jockeys which I WOULD recomend ......is also a realy good hull!

Having spent considerable time cruising with and helming a Ribcraft 585 and a little less time helming a 5.8 Vipermax, I personally prefer the handling chracteristics of the Vipermax. (No brand loyalty bollox.)
IMO, the 585 is prone to being light in the bow, they'll become bouncy in a head sea, trimming down helps but things get wet and stuffy. A VM 5.8 handles very much like a 6.5 with 700mm knocked off of it.

I have never know my RC 585 to be 'light in the bow' or 'bouncy' and she handles some quite rough stuff in the west of scotland. In general they are considered one of the better 'sea' boats even nearly as good as (que Willk) the Redbays!!
