Hull tie down points

Hi,

I'm looking to install several anchor points in my Tornado 5.8 hull, to anchor some tie downs that will hold 3 small sail boats in place for transporting them between events.

Does anybody know what they are called, or where I can get them from ? I like the fold flat ones that I've seen on a Zodiac, but have no idea there to get them.

Also, any advice on installing them, could I use a 'pasterboard' type compression fitting that spreads the load.

There won't be much load on them, just hand tight on a non leveraged tie down strap.

Don't underestimate the windage force when you're towing - If it's something vaguley wing shaped like a Topper or Laser the lift can become quite phenomenal - even the relative brick shape of an Oppie will generate a fair force.

Someone (Possibly Bramber or West Mersea, I forget whom) does "bolt on" multi deck bars for trailers - could that be a better bet? It would save you drilling holes in your RIB.

I'm not sure I would trust a load spreading fixing per say, If I were going to tie a dinghy to my RIB for towing I'd go for a variation on what my rib has now - A stainless plate on the outside of the hull & through bolt. FOr what you;re doing a 3mm plate wil lmore than suffice (I have 4mm, but they're designed to sling half a ton of rib from!) If you used Allen Pan Head bolts then the outside stays relatively smooth and even ratchet straps will not be a problem (well, apart from snapping your dinghy hull!)

They must be pretty small boats if you can put 3 of them onto a Tornado 5.8m.

I agree with the very wise words of 9D280, the wind effect will put a serious load on your boat. Modifying the trailer sounds like a much better option (and don't forget to make sure that your modified trailer will then be legal with it's increased load, and still within limits for your tow vehicle)

I'd have to agree with everyone else.

If you talk to trailer manufacturers they will be able to rig something proper up for you. I am not sure how you were going to do it on you rib but whatever you were planning would probably make it insucure and damage either the rib or dinghies.

You could roof rack one boat and have two dinghies on top of the rib.

I have seen a rib with a F18 (18Ft) catamaran on top of it. The Cat looked high bu was safe.

I sail F18s and there are a few people with these trailers one has it set up to tow a car underneath so he can use his massive campervan and then have a car at events!

HI Guys
The only issue I've seen with these designs is that the uprights can rock a bit.
But that aside they are the best option I have seen for shifting a rib and dinghy.
The craziest I towed was designed for 6 Laser 3000's that was one big trailer!

Tie downs are "ratchet straps" google them
As for the fixings you ask about screw fix do them

But please tell us you're not going to do that

Also remember the weight increase with the extra boats can your trailer/car take it legally.

if you do go down this route please post a picture as i 'm having a crap week
