If nobody lets you join there club and if I was in your position I'd seriously consider getiing myself proposed for membership at the Eastney Cruising Association. Then consider Eastlands at the top of the Hamble. This has what you are looking for.

Don't underestimate the time it takes to get between Eastlands and the sea though. It's a good 45 minutes either way, with very little scope for a bit of sneaky speeding.

To make matters worse, my experience of the customer service at Eastlands was appalling. Unless it has improved since then I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I think the yard is quicker to get into if you have a smaller boat and the price is dependent on size too. We keep our boat there and it is really good service, very easy.

I was on the waiting list for Haven Quay for eighteen months, and have just got slot, but I am a small boat (relatively) and live within walking distance.

To give you an idea, in the past calendar year I paid a total of £2100 to Berthon to keep my boat on its trailer on concrete hardstanding, one quarter of a mile from a slip which worked for me for 2/3 of the tidal range. She was overnighted in the water for about 5 or 6 weeks. All of that was included in the price.

{I also paid about £250 for repair to launch related damage to my hull - but put that down to learning experience}

I paid £150 to use the slip for the year. Total, excluding repairs, £2250.

This year from April I will be in Haven Quay using the lift. Tralier storage elsewhere in the New Forest. Total cost including unlimited launches and recoveries with no hassle £3100.

Difference £850.

Expected number of launches 50. Extra cost per launch £17.

Now the bad news. Estimated fuel cost per trip £45.

Number of extra trips compared to last calendar year because of no hassle with launching: 10. Cost £450

Number of suppers at Salty's compared to suppers at the Mayflower - 10. Additional cost per supper (berthing fee, better beer, wife is better at helming in the dark - something to do with carrots and no beer) £20. Cost £200.

Saving of one GRP repair - £200.

Overall analysis:

Explicit extra cost: £850
Extra Fuel: £450
Extra Supper Costs: £200
Less one GRP repair: £200

Extra overall cost £1300 - or say £100 a month

I am in the very fortunate position of being able to afford this - just - so if my experience of Haven Quay turns out to be much better than at Berthon, I will be a happy bunny.

Sparkes do dry boat sailing (no slip) for about £300 per metre April to October. Extra fee for winter storage. Unlimited launches but you do need 4 lifting eyes fitted to you rib (£100-200ish).

All the usual marina services and it's in the water when you get there

It's not cheap but the more you use it the better it becomes on a £/launch basis and you keep the hull clean.

Major downside is the hour it can take to get off Hayling on a summer's evening or bank holiday.

I've done it for last three years but thinking of moving to Northeney this year to avoid the evening traffic. Heard some stories about the steepness/slipperyness of the slipway there so any thoughts appreciated.

northney is just about to have a new slip way built,still where the excisting one is,but made a little less steep and will have a pontoon next to it(same style as the american slips),so will be very easy to launch if your on your own

I use Northney Slip. Its OK, the main thing with it is that there is a bend near the top apart from that its OK no more slippy that any others, it is steep but that means it does not need to go too far in the water.

I kept a boat at Northney for a couple of seasons, and I really like the slip there. It is steep, but that's not a bad thing if your tow car os up to it (a FWD saloon might struggle a bit though).

It's a bit slippy at low water, but at least it's usable at all tides. You can easily avoid the slippery bit by using a rope between the car and the trailer.

The main drawback is that it's about 40 minutes to the sea, and the Chichester Harbour patrols tend to be a bit overzealous for my liking!

What I might do is try a couple of pre-season launches there before making my mind up. In the meantime I'll keep looking for other venues within striking distance of the end of the A3(M).
