how do I get inflatable boat paint off my tubes

I have a rib with lettering painted on the side with inflatable boat paint.
The tubes are Hypalon.
I have tried acetone which just softens the paint
Any suggestions?

Hi

I used cheap pine cream cleaner and a green nylon pad to clean the tubes on my rib, not sure how it will work though on paint but i had some sail stickers which left a nasty glue mark once i'd managed to peel them off the green pad worked a treat on the glue, be warned though its very hard work and sole destroying scrubbing rib tubes but well worth it when its finished.

One other point, i thought it best to avoid cleaning agents or thinners to remove the grim, if they will remove glue or paint they cant do the material or the glues joining the panels too much good.

I use the cheap bathroom cream cleaner and a scrubbing brush for general cleaning. The paint comes up at treat but not off.
I may try paint stripper on a scrap of hypalon to see if it will attack the tubes.

Terrible, terrible, terrible advice so far. Don't listen to a word of it although given with the best of intention I'm sure, you should only ever use materials compounded spercifically for such a task. The fabric which makes up the majority of RIBS, although as tough as old boots when it comes to day to day use is as delicate as a babys backside if subject to the wrong types of cleaners.

I heartedly recommend the use of REVIVAL INFLATABLE RESTORER. It's bloody expensive (£13.00 per ltr) but once used it will clean the toughest stain, grease, road tar and as my own experience has shown, inflatable paint.

As one reader advised, it's sole destroying work and will take time.

Once you've used REVIVAL you'll be as hooked as me, I guarantee it.

Most decent inflatable stockists should have it however, I use MGA in Rochdale Lancs.

Thats a great product, but does it get the colour back on a faded hyperlon tube ?

The cream cleaner advise came from some of the other contributors to ribnet and it worked very very well to restore my faded tubes, remove baked on glue and clean out dirty scuff and gouges on the tubes, plus it cost me £56p a bottle and 35p for a pack of five green nylon pads which left me £12.09p to spend on beer.

Yep - you got the better deal alright !

Colour ? My Yachline had white tubes and although they never really faded, they did get bloody dirty from time to time. The revival removed grease and heavy fresh road tar (sticky as hell) without a problem, it also made short work of indelible marker which, in the hands of a 6 yr old can be fatal ! Further, it left the tubes looking really really clean with a nice sheen and for the ladies out there, a very nice orange odour !!!

I'm not familiar with REVIVAL INFLATABLE RESTORER, as mentioned in this thread, and would very much like to find a product that really works. Can anyone tell me what the active ingredients are, and if it is available in the US? Thanks.

How about using a wee bit of 1200 wet & dry paper and soapy water. Just go carefully. Actually, I'd use 320 grade because I'm impatient but it would probably leave a dull patch.

Nitromores paint stripper works on Hypalon tubes for removing …. Yes paint.

I tried this on a scrap first and it showed signs of absorption into the Hypalon but quickly evaporated out.
Hypalon never ceases to amaze me!
I then used a metal paint scraper to take off the paint (tubes inflated very hard).
Finnished off with bathroom cream and a green pad.
You can still see the shadow of the letters but the hypalon is now clean and shiney.

Hi MeMe, I need to remove tube paint completely off my rib, would "revival" be good enough for this job.
