How big is my transom? Ribtec 585

Hi,

I am looking to replace the stolen engine from my RIbtec 585. (1993)

I had a Yamamha 115hp V4 2 stroke, and that got pinched about a month ago.

I need the transom measurement of my boat, however, I am 100 miles and a 5 hour return trip from the boat, so it's not like I can just nip out and measure it.

Does anyone have the same boat, or could they tell me if I would have had a short or long shaft engine, (I think it was short), I would be grateful for a measurement. I don't know which size shaft I need to buy to replace the engine!

Many thanks!

Johnny

Should be long unless it's been cut down.

Hi Tim,

When you say cut down, do you mean that the transom has a sort of 'U' shape cut into it, the engine resting on the lowest part of the 'U' because this is the transom shape of my boat.

Regards

Johnny

I'm afraid I don't have one of the back of the boat but you can see the standard cut out for a long shaft engine on a 585:

Edit: Just looked through some pics at another 585 I had. That doesn't have a cut away at all, but I think the engine was an XL shaft. The one in the pic here is defiantly a long shaft.

I'd go with longshaft. Where abouts does the boat live?

Boat currently living in Middlesex, but spent its heydays in Poole, where it will be coming back to when re-engined.

Just went and had a look, my transom has a 2" and then a 4" step hence making yours looking bigger, my engine is a Longshaft.

Is that range black you've put over the brass and iron on the Kingdom Brunel 150?

Thanks Kernow,

I think I will have to see if I can get someone I know who lives where the boat is to measure it for me, as I didn't know there were so many variations in transom shape...I think this will be the safest bet.

Regards

Johnny

I've had someone measure it for me...

And the result is 20 1/2". I think that the access to the boat wasn't too easy, so I expect it is actually 21". I think this sounds right.

Thanks for all the assistance given.

Unless the transom has been cut down, a ribtec 5.85 would be a long shaft ofcoarse.

Some pics of my various Ribtec's transoms;

1st pic is the original un-touched transom with an extra long shaft Merc 135
2nd pic is the bare transom slightly cut down to take twin 75hp Mercs
3rd pic is the same transom with an extra long shaft 150 Merc 135
4th pic is my current boat with original height transom fitted with long shaft twin Yamaha 60's
5th pic is the first boat from a different angle.

Might be going to my boat tomorrow so can measure if needed.
