Holiday Cottage - Scottish West Coast with mooring or close to slip...

I've been busy so haven't been on here for a while, plus the boat has been out of the harbour over the winter.

Anyway to cut a long story short we plan to go on holiday with some extended family members somewhere on the Scottish West Coat next year, hiring a cottage for 5-6 people. We would quite like to take our boat (a SR4 but it may have been upgraded to a 5.4 by then..) and use it some of the time, but it will not be a dedicated boating holiday. Happy to ferry it over to islands etc, or helm it there.

Anyway which places would you suggest as good starting points to look at, either with handy slips or a temporary mooring?

And any places to avoid?

Thanks.

Our place in fort William.

Perfectly placed, Mallaig 45 mins, great
place to launch to go and discover Eigg, Muck, Rhum and Skye.

50mins to Oban, from here... well the world is your oyster.

Tayvalich some cottages with their own slip & mooring plus slip middle of village £5 per night on the pontoons brilliant place to start just google

Ardoran marine cottages with small marina good slip and pontoons but easy to launch and recover every day got their own web site.

Dunstaffnage mariner near Oban cottages everywhere try walk highlands web site.

In that case I'd pick somewhere that suits the rest of your interests, and then workout the boating options from there. Its probably not too hard to find some good boating on most of the W of Scot, whereas if you have to keep others happy being in the wrong place could make for a miserable week, or worse the belief that the whole area is "boring" and never going back!

Agree with Poly. We've stayed at an idyllic west coat boating location where SIBs can be launched at the bottom of the lawn and RIBs kept in the private harbour... but it's a one hour round trip for a pint of milk and non-boating entertainment even further which is less than ideal for those not committed to getting on the water every day.

Road to the Isles | Accommodation Details

and Road to the Isles | Accommodation Details

Plenty of stuff around these two and good access to the sea.

If the sea is rough, there's always Loch Morar that is worth a trip around - quite remote once you're part way down. If you want a slightly spooky night away, you can camp near the far end.

fortunately we are all different but I think that just emphasises my point, even for a boating holiday we don't all agree what makes the perfect location!

Toridon is an excellent base. Plenty of holiday cottages, good slipway and the Toridon hotel offers bar/restaurant food... if you're pushing the boat out (excuse pun) their hotel restaurant is amazing. The hotel also offers various outdoor sports and fishing for non boaters. We cruised to the Isle of Canna from there last year. Isle of Rona may have Bothy accommodation if you fancied a short overnight trip. Pm me if you want more info.
