Help with Steering System (rotary helm)

Hi guys,

Was hoping someone can give me a bit of advice on the rib steering system. I launched my rib today and noticed the steering was very stiff. Having looked behind the stewing wheel in the console I noticed that the rotary helm cover was loose (cast metal/aluminium part) . I took this off to check and found that one of the spindles for locating one of the internal cogs had sheared off.

My question really is can I just replace this part (think its called the rotary helm) or is it a complete unit including the cable all the way back to the engine?

Probably cheaper and far easier to replace the whole helm unit. They are around the £100 area depending which type you go for.

Thanks turbo. Does the unit not separate behind the steering wheel? Any recommendations for type for a rib. Have an 70hp on the back of a 5.5mt rib.

You'll need to replace it with an identical unit, or you'll also have to purchase a new cable.

It does separate but i dont now if you can get the parts (im sure you can from somewhere) but usually its just a replacement helm. For your HP make sure it is using what is now called an M66 cable which is for 50hp and over.

It is a teleflex cable so must be one of their helms I assume.

I will check the cable Turbo bus as far as I know the cable was supplied with the engine through a main dealer. This was before I took ownership. Is there an easy way to identify the helm type/part no. In position while still installed i can't identify it!

Aquafax are great, but they're Uflex dealers, if your after Teleflex, have a look here... Bainbridge Marine > Mechanical

Thanks guys. The cable is deffo a teleflex but based on the design of the cog system which is the planetary layout it seems to be a ultraflex helm. Armed with this knowledge and after a YouTube review of how to install the cable I will try and remove the helm tonight and at least I can see what I am at then!

Right guys.

Getting there but still no final decision. The cable is a teleflex SSC6214 (14ft) but based on the design of the helm being planetary I am convinced it is like a ultraflex rotech type. Would it be common for the teleflex cable to fit the ultraflex helm? Also is the SSC6214 up to the M66 standard?

I like the planetary design and would probably opt to go that way if I cannot mix and match.

At least I get my new battery tomorrow so at least I am making progress. :-)

Teleflex do a planetary helm, although I don't know if it's compatible with your cable. Has yours got Quick Connect?

Cheers Dirk. Ya it has a quick connect system. The pic below shows the shaft which looks different to the teleflex ones. Maybe they are all interchangable.

It looks different again. The spindle for the steering wheel is centred on my helm and with the space I have in the console I am nearly stuck with doing that again.
