You don't need one for the PMR446 frequencies.

You do need one for the PMR channels on the Icom IC-M87 radio.

The frequency(s) allocated to PMR 446 aern't very close to those used by the marine VHF channels and so the equiptment concerned can't be configured to use those frequencies...only licencable ones.

Jon are you the helpful guy who was going to come down and re-configure my DS-100 unit in Ramsgate in return for a run out in the boat?

Waht I like most of all about my ICOM is when i turn it to channel 69 it indicates it's a pleasure channel.

Ch 69 is our own little added feature!!!
We used it as an in joke to see how many times it got printed!!

Always makes me chuckle when I see it.

Had a couple at the boat show to whom I was explaining the feature of renaming the channel names.

I turned to ch 69 (pleasure), he laughed, she said she did not understand.
He said don't worry I will tell you in a min.

I said thank god you did not say you would show her in a min!!!!

Now Jon you need to know your product range better than that - that is an M601 and does not need a DSC unit does it

The Humber I use is owned by a charity called St Dunstan's and is based in Brighton.

We (Icom) do a great deal of work/sponsorship with them.
I also get involved on a personal level.

In the near future will be looking for a boat of my own so you may well see me out in the area over the summer.

How easy and costly is it do get a license for the PMR channels supported by the set? I presume it isnt covered in the regular VHF license...

It is not covered by your standard marine VHF licence.

The cheepest way to do it would be, I think, to apply for the UK General PBR licence.
This will cost £60 for 3 years.(£20 per year)
Will give you a number of VHF frequencies and UHF one's to.

You can apply on line, try the Ofcom website as a starter.
