Afternoon.

can anyone tell me if the lightship is still there and operating as a bar / resturant?

Thinking of getting out on thursday evening and dont fancy going against the wall in Yarmouth

As far as I know it's still operating, nice bar and restaurant. You'll get stung for mooring fees though.

What's wrong with the visitors pontoons in Yarmouth then?

The pontoons are great but thought short term moorings were against the wall which i'm not a fan of? Unless I am wrong of course? Would far prefer to go to the wheatsheaf!

You can go on the walk ashore pontoon at Yarmouth if they are free. Or speak nicely to them and they may let you raft to a yacht ( especially if its not being used/stayed on) or another RIB on the pontoon.

I really cant remember the last time I wasn't on a walk ashore at Yarmouth

They let you raft if there's no room, but only on the visitors pontoon. Short stays are up to 4hrs, but it's slightly more expensive than the wall but worth the money for peace of mind.

One for the future Zippy is the Sloop in Wooten creek. You'll not be able to tie up to the wall Thursday, but on a large tide can stay 1hr either side of HW.

The Lightship is still operating but as Hightower said the ongoing battle for short time visitor berthing is still a problem.

Well in that case think we will head for Yarmouth Thursday evening then. Only been to the sloop once andy, think you were there when we managed to rewire my first boat after the battery isolator destroyed itself!

If yarmouth is busy can always pop over to lymington for a bag of chips on the quay!

well if your about give me a shout. should be leaving Hamble around 7 ish and heading down to Yarmouth for a drink and some food! will keep my ears open to see if i can hear you!

The Lightship is currently operated by my business parnter. I have personally brought up the issue of the mooring fees as I know it's be discussed on here but there is nothing that we can do; the marina insist on it. The lightship does do an offer where by if you take your crew abroad for a meal, the skippers is free which hopefully makes up for having to pay a few quid to park. I believe it's currently £6. This is still much cheaper than a short stay in Gunwharf, and of course you have the benefit of the fantastic view.

Will give this a try next week. Anyone have the cost of a short stay at Haslar?? given there are only 2 of us will they still do this deal or do they have a minimum crew number?

Anyway, shot off down to Yarmouth last night, Mrs Zippy driving both there and back so i could have a few sherbets!

For those that know Yarmouth already it will come as no surprise but the food in the Wheatsheaf is really very good and cheap too!

Few pics coming back at dusk. Did see a Ribcraft 750 sport (i think) going in as we came out later in the evening and a couple of ribs on the wall. anyone from here??

Much as we'd all like it to be free, that doesn't sound too bad in the grand scheme of a day's boating. It's only £1 or £2 more than Yarmouth anyway.

i reckon thats a bargain!!

i paid (inclusive of taxi to shore) £10.50 in Yarmouth last thursday!

hopefully we will get to try the lightship this week!

on the subject of short term berthing, i dont have a problem paying for it when it warrants paying!

Last time i was at Haslar we were alongside the pontoon, facilities were good and it wasn't that expensive.

that compared with say, town quay at Cowes in the middle of summer when your rafted out and everyone is jumping over your boat... and they still charge you £5.

for the cost of 2 pints i would rather feel the boat was safe whilst i was relaxing. i have been to cowes before and wondered if the boat will still be there when i come back. doesnt make for a relaxing day!!

Well I think it's a rip off, but that's just my opinion but I do launch near by. I used to pop in there for a coffee/shandy or a light meal/breakfast before recovering or after launching. It was also handy for meeting people too.

When I travel to Yarmouth or Cowes as a final destination I'm more likely to spend longer time there so making it better value for money.

Fully agree with your comments. I was sat on a mooring buoy on Saturday waiting for clients and saw some "boat handling/mooring" at Cowes Town Quay and it was fairly quiet but I was not leaving our boats there for the reasons you describe.

Well what you need to do is launch your boat and do a quick lap of the island before you go to the Lightship. Then it will be a bargain!
