Harbour Speed and Wash

Just a quick note before I forget....

I spoke to the harbour Master in Cowes the other day and he said that they are having a crack down on the speed of vessels and also their wash in the harbours around the Solent area.

Obviously they will stop any boats going too fast, however they will also stop boats that are obeying the 6 knot speed limit if they are creating too much wash.

They will also share the naughty boys information with the other harbours in the area.

I don't know if this is a new thing or not but I just wanted to give you lot the heads up

Hamble Harbour master have a speed gun which they love to sit at the bottom of the river with!

I wish they'd do that to the passenger ferries up from Putney Bridge. Regularly @ 15 knots esp west of Richmond.
Gloriana took a pounding when she was moored up.

The Twatt actually has a point. My Rinker 21ft sports cuddy used to drop it's arse and put up an almighty pile of wash off of the plane. Get her up and virtually nil. The Fal. HM launches never really bought into that theory.

Bet it didn't kick up a massive wash at 4 knots though.

I'm barely off tickover if it's flat calm and I'm in an area with moored boats.

It wasn't great moving at all off of the plane. 5.7lts of Yank iron back aft made a fair hole.

Dead slow and minimum wake are favoured over speed limits in east Devon and west Dorset, many in place to protect river banks and reed beds. It is mind-numbing when you have a 30 minute plod out to open water though, especially for some of the bigger/faster boats out there.
I am fairly lucky that my boat is moored in a harbour about 100 yds from open water.

Still trying to figure out how the car boats (Spread Eagle, Dead Falcon etc...) manage to do 14Knts past the VTS tower when all other commercial traffic has to obey a 6Knt speed limit

From the 1st April the speed limits in Cowes were changed to through the water from over the ground, a 4 knot limit has been introduced south of Kingston and there are discussions on giving the chain ferry right of way.

That's because they call up VTS on the radio and ask permission to exceed the speed limit every time they approach..... But it still doesn't make it right though.....

And yet the Thames ferries don't request permission and a blind eye is turned, even though they destroy the banks and flood moored boats. Mind you, there is nobody to call. Despite having to register for the pleasure of using the river.

I think you will find thats only the jets that call up... The car ferries blatantly speed on by!
