Handheld Upgrade

I'm about to replace ICOM handhelds with a new set of four handhelds.

One to use, one for another crew member, one as back-up and one to throw to another vessel/MOB.

They will be used alongside fixed VHF but I wish to have a portable and transferable system.

Anyone know if there's something around the corner to wait for? Buying in Feb.

Love to stay with ICOM......need buoyancy and immersed visibility ( and therefore 100% proofness!! ) but not averse to other opinions.

Ideas?

Standard Horizon HX751 or the HX851 which has DSC.

Have both and also seem very popular on here

851 is the current favourite.....good call. Any warranty claims anybody? Or niggles?

I know of a recent comparison between icom and sh. After three months the icom looked three years old...the sh looked six months old after three years !....

I've got three sh now....851 being one, and a750 and a270.

I have an Icom M71 for the boat & I use Icoms professionally, they are bullet proof. Excellent battery life, clear sound & rugged.

At this years Southampton boat show I bought an ICOM M23. Did a fair bit of homework first, as it was going to be used for work not leisure. Have only used it a few times so far (don't do much boat work in the winter) but it is easy to operate, nice and loud, and if its as rugged as previous icoms I have used I will be happy.

My M71 is 5 years old and works fine, charges like new etc but looks battered.

My SH handheld won't hold a charge very well after 18 months but looks like new-probably because I usually use the M71 as it's easier to attach to a lifejacket securely.

I'm not going to recommend a radio but to have a speaker mike, I've an icon with speaker mike attached to my life jacket, with the mike close to my ear I can hear even when it's windy and by the time you have put your hand over the mike to push the talk button it cancels the wind noise on transmission
