OK then.
They are FB MIL-50's (Fabio Buzzi Design).
They are powered by 3 x 1000hp Seatek engines giving a topspeed of "over 70".
They have Trimax Surface Drive props with 2-speed gearboxes and, undeneath the boat, are FB Design built-in trim tabs.
The hulls are composite Kevlar, foam filled, making the external hull surface impregnable to marine growth.
These boats are in use by the Royal Marines and one of them developed an engine fault and they had to call in at Alderney for repairs.

Ok, probably a stupid question, but does the two speed gearbox mean Forward and reverse, or does it have 2 forward gears?

I assume the its the kevlar composite that makes it impervious to barnacles, not the foam?

btw. Must be somthing badly wrong with the engines... look at the guy sat above the engine.

I rekon they'd give a class one powerboat a run for its money with that amount of power, they probably in the right conditons cruise at 70 knots - they can't weigh that much and at 50ft - maybe 12 -14 tons? the sunseeker xs (at about 33 foot and 6/7tons) can do 60-70 knots on 850hp on trimax's...wonder what the range is...and cost...probably like tearing handfulls of 20 pound notes up out the back at 70 knots...

Hmmmmm...I want a go in one of them... (we're paying for them afterall)

only just seen this thread, guest they would be buzzi, as thats all they tend to use for fast speed work, although they are of a different design to the one's I have been on, those motor's often do turbo's, very unlikly they are 1000hp each they run 3x650hp, and the wavepiercer looks nothing like these

Differentiated sandwich laminate

Description: It concerns a differentiated sandwich laminate (comprising an outer layer, an intermediate layer or “centre”, and an inner layer), in which the resin used for making the outer layer is different from, and incompatible with, the resin used for making the inner layer.

The inner layer and outer layer of sandwich laminate of the adjacent layers of two different sandwich laminates, made according to the invention, are made to adhere in a watertight manner to each other using mechanical-assembly means.

The resin used for external lamination protects from osmosis and avoids the absorption of water. The internal lamination gives higher protection against shock loading. The presence of a core between the two laminats has an effect of separation. The internal laminat reacts as a second hull and guarantees the floatability in case of damage of modest proportion.

Cost is just under a million pounds each. Dont know about range. But when they left harbour, after a few minutes and miles warming up, they sudenly turned, put on an incredible speed and disappeared down The Swinge.

Dont know about Devonport.
There were three questions that I asked them that they were vague about:
1. What are you doing around here?
2. Where are you going next?
and 3. Where are you weapons?

They were very vague on those three subjects although very forthcoming about every other subject I asked them about.
They had no weapons on show, were not wearing uniforms and hinted vaguely they were just cruising around the islands.

I think you'll find that they are under trial with the SBS and not 'in service' with the marines. It's their latest RIC (Rapid Insertion Craft). They are Buzzis. A guy I know that has been in the 'Marines' for years mentioned them.
