GPS Locator for finding stolen RIBS.

I posted a similar post in another thread but considering whats just happened to Rogue Waves Scorpion (im gutted for you) I thought it deserved its own thread.

I was browsing around Expansys web site and came accross these.

http://www.expansys.com/product.asp...67&sbadd=123267

Its £345 but surely if you hide this thing well enough in your boat it will greatly increase your chances of getting a stolen RIB back.

It has an internal back up battery and also will report the closest gps antenna so it will even give a rough location if no gps signal is available (ie they have it stashed in a warehouse etc...)

It could even be used when your boat hasnt been stolen by your missus to find out where you are. (ok that may not be a plus point for some people)

Im seriously thinking about fitting this to my RIB - lets face it its only the cost of a years insurance and we dont even think twice about getting our boats insured.

heres some more info

correct url is:- http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=123267

They LOOK like a good idea-but I wonder-do they need an external antenna or will the work as a standalone unit hidden inside the hull etc ?

Doesn't come with ariels etc though-that sounds like it'll be a bit obvious if you've got to fit seperate antenna for it.

Have a Look at the package price which does come with antenna's, and at least with seperate antenna's you can hide the black box easier and the antenna's dont have to be external, just with not too much fibregass between them and and sky, see pics of them on the site

I saw a similar system with that chaps who rebuilt a Landrover on Discovery channel he gave his a mate telling off via a speaker which was amusing but did highlight that this type of system was fitted.

The point of my post is toward manufacturers; is security something that could be designed in, I've heard anecdotal evidence that Mr Jelley is a perfectionist when it comes to this. If one manufacter leads then the others usually follow.

Not very clued up on electronics, but I have been told of a gang a few years ago that was stealing machinery up here and as a matter of the act used to run a weld from a portable along the machine that would bugger the tracker unit .
Will keep any eye out up here for Rouges Rib, word must be all over the country now as I have recieved about 5 e-mails from various people about it, and Jelly posted it on Yorkshire Divers .

GPS tracker with map

A mate of mine has just introduced a system that allows not only the "escaped" vessel to be tracked but can be traced via a map source -even to the thief's "backyard" - Here it is

What worries me is how easily these systems that report back via the mobile phone network can be jammed - for a pro thief it would be SO simple!!!
