The government, who make no funding towards the RNLI rescue service around our little island are now thinking of making the RNLI pay more for VHF licenses:

I know they are hard up for money!! but do they charge other services involved in life saving for their radio usage- I bet they dont.

They are also going to charge Air Traffic Control for using the radio frequencies too!

Now if they could just let us know of another way to control aircraft to avoid these charges ....

i wondered a few years back when they introduced the free licence thinking that in a few years time when they have everyone on record that they would bring back the charges.especialy with the cheapo handhelds that alot of people have now .next will be mobile phones and bluetooth ect.well the rnli can always go back to using maroons instead of pagers i suppose but will need a fireworks permit for that too now i suppose,.

The only reason we stopped using maroons was on health and safety grounds. Maroons were and still are better than pagers... well in my opinion.

We still have maroons at the St Helier station but they had to be stopped at St Catherines because some ignorant selfish person bought a house nearby and complained about the noise.

Ofcom need tellling quite severely how out of order this idea is. Lets get emailing-and spread it around too. Even the general public will be appalled by this.

There hasn't been a mention on this thread yet that it isn't just charges for radio spectrum - the proposal is that radar will also be charged (and some aeronautical navaids), although EPIRBS would be exempt

The consultation asks: "We are inviting views on whether charities whose objective is the safety of human life in an emergency should receive a discount". If you feel strongly, respond to that invitation

.... The most galling part of it is, the councils rely on these charities to provide a safety service which they (under current legislation) must have in place.

If the units ceased to be, it would cost the government tenfold.
