Glue and stuff for Zodiac Z34

Sixy has her own boat now- a Zodiac Zed 34 sib (cheers Neil!).

There's a couple of odd jobs I need to do before it goes in the water.

1) The inflatable keel has come unglued.

2) The bond between the black rubber bit between the transom and the tubes has come slightly adrift at the join with the transom.

It looks like Hypalon-but the rubber bit that's bonded to the transom isn't and the keel isn't.
What glue do I use?

Hi Matt,

The keel tube came unstuck now and again, and the old man reckons he used to stick it down with ordinary contact adhesive from memory. I don't if it really needs it though, it seemed to stay in place with pure pressure between hull material and the boards, it has not got far to go.
I have no idea what glue you use.

Is the black rubber bit going to be OK? I did not notice any problem last weekend when I blew it up, but all I really did check was that it still inflated, held air OK and was all there.

If the transom looks bad or is a concern, let me know, I'll collect it some time and you can have your money back.

And if you get her out, post some pics and info on speed etc, as I had been considering sticking a 20 on it myself for some fun at some point.

Cheers

Neil

It's fine-it's only minor-cheers Neil! It's just me being picky. It's only a case of pulling it apart so there's enough room to get some glue in there and shoving some glue in then holding it together for a bit til it sets.

I've got contact adhesive-if that's what was used before I'll use that again for the keel. I'm not sure what to use on the transom.

I think I'm going to have to find a handheld GPS. I can lift the whole thing when it's together so I imagine it'll be quite quick...

Dad's found the old brochure. It's not Hypalon but it is Dynalon and coated in polyester.

Dad has the brochure and care leaflet at home he's found. I can post it if you pm me an addredd or bring it on the next cruise we're both at. (you might have to remind me though!)

On the glue front, might be worth trying these guys.

Of course you'll be looking for a steering bar as well now. with a 20 on, reckon you'll need it to get the weight up front, or at least a tiller extension

Thanks Neil,PM sent.

I was wondering about tiller extensions-there's just enough room for her to get a fair way forward but not sure if it's enough.

Matt, given that you suspect you've got several different materials to bond together I'd reckon Bostik 2402 would be worth a try. Its a pretty good fall-back option for everything except plasticized PVC. Link to RS website included

Thanks Andrew. I ordered some 2402 (useful stuff to have around anyway).
I also happened upon This stuff on the Seamark Nunn website while I was looking around and I'm tempted to try it. I'll try it on something similar before I let it anywhere near the boat though.

The actual bit that needs bonding is below:-

Your welcome Matt.

I've tried some of the Devweld stuff before - not sure if it was the one you've got a link to though. Anyways the particular compound I tried was really good for bonding rigid plastics (repairing equipment casings/ consoles) but was quite rigid so was little use for flexible bonds. However I guess you'll know for sure when your tube arrives.

I also think that I've got some polymarine PVC somewhere in the shed. I'm in Poole so if you're coming down this way (dunno if your dad's boat is still at parkstone) then give me a shout and I'll look it out and let you have it - save's buying a whole tub and I've now got a hypalon boat rather than my old PVC Narwhal.

Have fun with the SIB

Andrew

Cheers Andrew,

The stuff from Devweld arrived today and I did a test piece with some similar material (unprepped) onto some wood. It seemed to work very well-after an hour I ripped them apart and it took a lot of doing.
The glue was still on the material and bits of wood came away on what came off so I did the repair with it.

Sounds like you're pretty well set, but for future reference, Aquaseal (by McNett) supposedly does a good job on PVC (and hypalon, for that matter), and pretty much bonds to anything short of silicone.

Personally, I'd use it as a last-ditch weapon in the arsenal, at least for boats (it's primary in my dive gear kit), but nice to know it's there.
