Fuel Prices around the Solent

Treating ourselves to a month in the Marina at moment (East Cowes), so need to fill up on the water rather than the local Sainsburys.

Anyone know the cheapest place to get fuel, as I'm assuming I'll be paying a premium if I fill the boat at Cowes.

Fill up where it's local, by the time you've driven off to some place cheaper it would have cost you more in fuel to get there than you'd have saved.

I reckon you'll pay 15-20p premium compared to Sainsburys, even with our discount at the marina it's about 15p a litre more.

I think Yarmouth is one of the Cheapest - but don't know what the current rate is....

And I would just like to say what an excellent job you did Nick

How come the prices aren't clearly displayed for Petrol like they are for diesel?

I've only been there a couple of weeks (part time), so I am still getting a feel of how it all works.
But one thing is clear, far more diesel is sold than petrol, on todays figures, 7 to 1.
So I suppose the price of diesel is more important than the price of petrol.
Having raised the question, I will ask about it.
Also the fuel berth was bought by the harbour commission recently partly because of a lack of interest from anyone else and they did not want to see a resource simply close.
So before, it was run as a business by owner/operators, now it is run as owner/employees. So getting any improvements done is subject to a managerial overview.
One thing I can say, because of the sunshine today, it was rather busy.

There's a huge amount of whinging about the price of fuel "on the water"...

There's a huge amount of whinging about the problems of filling 150L of petrol into cans at Tescos, if they'll let you...

I'm not really moaning about the price, although having to pay an extra 22p a litre feels a little high, just because the petrol station is at the edge of the water

Maybe these places could sell other products to increase/offset margins? Snacks/drinks etc?

My original point was just really to compare prices to make sure we didn't pay more than necessary.

Sorry, I was just "thinking out loud". It's something I've heard a lot recently and it's just been sat there, brooding

You're right about the other products in so far as that's what helps keep fuel cheap elsewhere. The site where I often launch has just lost it's only petrol pump (in the village) because the guy can't keep up with the H&S requirements and red tape - he's gone diesel only. It can't be easy in marinas.

Mike at Puffin Divers puts it nicely on his website:
"Users should be aware that the rates for fuel are based on the highland costs of supply to remote or non mainstream franchised fuel suppliers. The result is that the fuel is provided as a service to our customers for the convenience of filling up on the water. The rate charged is consistent with most marina and local garages. Bargain hunters should purchase from Tesco's or similar (if available). It should be noted also that the margins on fuel supplied do not even cover the cost of the fuel operation and a sale of even several hundred pounds will only contribute a mere few pounds to the PDC fuel operation budget especially when transactions take into account the cost of payment method, staff attendance and availability at the point of issue and training in accordance with legislation for the Sale of Fuels, annual licenses and servicing costs etc., This is mentioned to help with awareness by customers who mistakenly believe that a fuel transaction of less than 50 litres is a reason to celebrate!"
