Fuel availibility on Jura???

Hi

Does anyone know if you can get fuel on Jura? Last time I was there I took 3 tanks with me but I’m staying longer this time. I know there’s a petrol station at Port Askaig on Islay, but it’s about a 14 mile round trip from Craighouse, and I’ll be spending most of the time at the north of the island. (Corryvreckan calls )

Ideas?

Thanks
Julie

It's for a long weekend...... staying at the Jura hotel. Launching from Carsaig.

I just want to spend lots of time playing round the back of Jura, Corryvreckan, and the Garvellachs.

Some of my friends will be taking their jetski too, hence the need for lots of fuel We're all petrol heads!

Would you suggest anywhere else to launch from, or anywhere else worth seeing round those parts?

Cheers

West side of Jura is perhaps one of the gems of the whole west coast. Loch Tarbert one of the Grandest places in the area. West Scarba - or east, Lunga, The Black Isles, Belnahua, Easdale. L. Craignish, Crinan, L. Sween, McCormaig Isles. But nothing beats the wildness of west Jura shores. There's Colonsay as well, of course, but ferries go there and there're people.

as you can see I boat out of Loch Sween and have to bring my petrol over in jerries from Lochgilphead. if you are launching from carsaig which is over the hill on the Sound side you would have to do the same. Port Ellen marina would be the nearest depends where you are staying if it is Craighouse the Jura/tayvallich ferry rib comes from islay if you contact him he may come to an arrangement to bring you some it is wirth a phone call. Crinan only does diesel and the rest would be too far away for your cruise purposes. if you are at the north of Jura it is difficult as most of the marinas up that way only do diesel. much to myself, Alystra and Elan Mhor's disgruntlement as we have to jerry everything. I do agree with Tony re the places to visit. When are you going as I am heading up for two weeks on the 23rd?

Yep. I have a 32 mile - or 46 mile - round trip to get fuel, depending on whether I need to go to Tesco's in Oban, or can manage with the Co-op in Lochgilphead.

I'm hoping to be out and about this coming week and could be messin in the Corry towards the end of it. Might well see you around Billy.

Cheers, Tony

Hi,

Thanks for the info.

We're aiming to go on the August Bank hol weekend...

After that 2 full weeks further north, launching from some of my fav places on Skye, Mull, Gairloch, and Arisaig. (Where fuel is no problem, and I'll have the car to be able to fetch it!)

It's not often I venture as far south as Jura!

Julie

Fuel availibility on Jura???

It is rare for there to be no fuel at the Jura Hotel Pump, except if the Feolin Ferry is out of action....

It may be a bit far for you to go, but if you are going as far north as the Garvellachs anyway, Puffin Divers in Kerrera Sound is just a but further on and they have petrol (and diesel) on the dockside.

Petrol on gigha

Julie

There is petrol available on gigha.

If you tie up a the timber jetty on gigha it is only a 200m walk to the local shop. They have cans available and will deliver down to the waterfront. very helpful people.

Otherwise no perol at Craobh but there is petrol available at Puffin divers just south of Oban.

Travelling up from Jura to Oban go through Cuan Sound and through Easdale As you approach Oban from the south Kerrara Island will be on the west side of the channell and Puffin Divrs are on the east. Fantastic facilities and very helpful people. Easy to find. everything is paintd black and yellow.

Njoy.

I'm jealous! Everytime I've been there it's not been that rough, just ended up swinging and kicking the back end a lot.............

What state of tide where you there?

Hi Julie

We were 3hrs after HW on a fairly big tide. we estimated the standing wave to be 3m high. felt a bit safer in an 11m cabin redbay than i would on a jet-ski!!!

Lovely day for it, I was exploring the islands in Loch Shuna. Awesome RIB too Mike. Walked past her on the pontoons yesterday. Drool - but then I thought of the fuel.

Wow, 3m. I'd have been scared or watching!

The biggest standing wave I've ever played on was about 1.5m in Kyle Rhea......
