Fuel

Hi

I know this is probably a difficult question to answer but I am thinking of going on the round isle of wight trip which is coming up.

I normally carry 35 litres of fuel 1 tank + 10 litres spare. I am trying to work out very roughly how much fuel I will need to carry. i am going to buy a spare 25 litre tank this weekend so will then have 50 litres.

55 HP Suzuki 2 stroke.

Any ideas would be welcome.

Thanks
Pete

It's going to be about 55nm round the IOW plus you have to get to Wootton and back so I suspect you will need more than 50l

Of course it all depends on how big a rib that 50HP is pushing, no of persons onboard, how hard you drive it, etc. A 4m rib, one person onboard, not being used at WOT may get round on 50l with plenty of unused fuel as reserve.

If you give details of size of rib, number of persons onboard, driving style, others more knowledgeable than me will be along to advise.

I have only just got my own SR4 so have not yet worked out fuel consumption, but i would have thought it was well under 1l per nautical mile, possibly as little as 0.5l per nm. Try asking whisper or peterm as they have both had SR4's with 40 or 50 2 strokes.

Thanks I will.

I only got mine last year, I am going to try and work out fuel consumption this weekend using the GPS.

If I manage to work it out I will post it as a matter of interest.

Thanks again for your comments.

How are you enjoying your SR4? Only bought mine a couple of weeks ago and had it's maiden voyage last Saturday evening (went out for about an hour)

I was surprised how good the acceleration was, and she gives a much greater sensation of speed than the larger ribs I usually helm. Staying on the jockey seat may be a challenge though

I am really enjoying her it is a very capable craft for the size and a lot of fun with the 55 hp Suzuki on the back !!

I owned a 5 m ribeye before this which was a family boat but now I am on my own the Avon is a good size to launch and recover single handed.

I have got her up to 35 mph on the GPS this year but as you know it feels a lot faster !!

i was told when i had 2 strokers that fuel consumption was 1 gallon /10 hp.

so your 55hp would be looking at 5.5 gallons / hour or 25 litres/hour.

which for a SR4 with 55hp guessing your top end is 30 knots....so that would work out at just under a litre/NM

i had twin 65's and this formula worked pretty well for them

glad ive got a 4 stroke 250 now

Have a search ofr "fuel consumption" - pekty of posts in the past.

My humber is 5m & clocks in at 430-ish Kg (without me!). With the aeging 60 I have a recorded 0.83 L / NM if I stick at around 20- 22 Knots. I'm waiting for a calm day to nail the throttle for an extended period to see what it does to the drinking figures.

Other option - any boating mates you could borrow a tank from? I had to buy a Tohatsu connector to make a 3" long adaptor hose for Easdale as I borrowed a friend's tank.

They definitely feel a lot faster than they are

NathanK did RTIOW last year in a SR4. Maybe he can tell us how much fuel he used.

Thanks to everyone for their comments and help I think if I work on 1L per mile I should be ok and hopefully over cautious !!.

For the trip I will have 2 25 L tanks + 10 L in reserve.

Cheers

yes but etec's arent fuel drinking basic 2 strokes !

this gauge of 1 gall /10 hp was for the old standard basic 2 stroke engines, carb's only... so no fuel injection, no returning fuel with lean burn etc..

Bet they're a bit thirsty if you run everywhere at WOT with a grin on your face and only the prop in the water as most SR4 owners do though
