Freelander 2 problem

Hi does anyone know anything about a known problem with the rear differentials on Freelander 2's causing a whining noise above about 30mph?

Sure its not a wheel bearing ? having said that the build quality is fairly hit and miss,my RR Sport grenaded its engine (due to a faulty casing) at 60k and cost 9 grand to fix!
Most landrover products have lots of problems that are common knowledge in the trade and often known about by owners but apparently have never been heard of by land rover themselves (in my opinion, based on being a car dealer and garage owner for 30 years)
Best way to locate the source of the noise is to put it on a wheel free ramp then have someone drive it and stand underneath and listen to the bearings etc with a stethoscope. Prop shaft support bearings are a favourite on those if I remember correctly. Be bloody careful though !

Rear diff is one of many problems with them. As suggested run it up on a wheel free on a ramp and listen to it with a stethoscope or screwdriver on the casing. Several vehicles run this system and they all fail.The Kia uses a Borg Warner back axle with this setup and the quoted price for a new unit is around £3500! I don't know what the Freeloader part will cost as I won't work on them, but I imagine it will be similar.

how many miles these back axles usually good for?

It has about 65k miles on it, just out of warranty. LR say it's the rear diff front pinion bearing.....sound reasonable.....they have quoted £600!

Seen loads of these very common. That a fair price lr quoted. A lot on eBay with rear props missing as owners not wanted to pay to fix them, you can take rear prop off and use as two wheel drive.

Take it to the scrappie and give him 50 quid .. he'll probably want 250 to operate the crusher though fair price TBH

If the front pinion bearing has let go, that will mean the pinion has worn on the Crownwheel unevenly, where it tries to push away from the crown wheel. If you replace the bearing there is a good chance that the diff will whine anyway due to uneven teeth wear.If the bearing has chipped, some of the shrapnel will have travelled round the rest of the diff components and may have damaged them.

You might get lucky if you have caught it early enough, but the odds are against it.

£600 is a good price if that sorts it out, there is quite a lot of work involved to do the job properly. If they just pull the prop flange, pinion seal and pull out the bearing without stripping the diff out fully and cleaning it out, it will probably fall apart again pretty quickly.
Make sure you ask them to give you a written description of what they are going to do and a breakdown of parts and labour.

Sorry not a freelander but once had an old ex coastguard landrover that had been stood for years , when i finally got it back on road every time it got above 30 mph a whining vibrating noise ,occurred
everyone listening diagnosing diffs ,props shafts , bearings ect after weeks of checking everything and still having the noise
eventually ,it turns out I had removed an old VHF aerial and forgot to grommet the hole , the air was whistling past the hole resonating and causing the vibration and whine .

I used to have a series 3 that whined terribly, until I realised it only happened when the wife was sat in the passenger seat........................................
