Well done to all involved,

It looks like the conditions were perfect, ave speed of aprox 43 Nm/h thats some going!!

At what state of the tide did you pass the bridges and swellies and were you flat out at this part of the event?

Looks like you had a great time - nice to see that the hull ain't so bad after all....

Funny feeling the record won't stand for long now the gauntlet has been thrown down - then again they do say if you can sail around Anglesey you can sail around the world because the conditions can change so fast!!!

Conditions were good except the north of the island which slowed us to 37 knots for a good number of miles. Swellies and Straits were 47 knots, start to finish as the way was clear. Tide was flood at Beaumaris and ebb at Caernarfon Bar when we left, arriving back at Beaumaris at HW.

Thanks guys for you comments

After a year of planning and then 3 months of strong winds, we managed to set a GO date for the Circumnavigation of Anglesey record for Sunday February 4th 2007. Prior to this we spent 3 hours on Friday filming with the BBC on the Straits for the news that night, Saturday was spent doing 'bits' on the boat.
We departed Beaumaris Pier at 10:30 with two RYA timekeepers clocking us off. The BBC had a film cameraman and the Daily Post had a stills photographer onboard another RIB just off the start/finish line.
The run through the Menai Straits was flat clam water and hardly any other craft out. This allowed us 47 knots for the full length, even through the Swellies. This was an experience!
After leaving the Straits at Caernarfon Bar we ran up the west coast of the island. South Stack was clear and visible but as we approached Holyhead the fog loomed ahead of us. The visibility in these fog banks was good so we had no reduction in speed. Next point was Skerries Lighthouse, this was turned and then the fun began. All across the top of Anglesey was rough. Not the roughest seas we get, but sufficient to slow us down to 37 knots. This had an impact on the overall time. Once approaching Puffin Island we could open up again and entered the Straits at W.O.T. The run past Beaumaris Pier was great fun and a relief as my biggest concern on the day was getting all the way round. What a waste of a year of planning and all the spectators time if we didn’t make it.
So there it is! 1 hour, 35 minutes and 10 seconds (68nm distance travelled). It is up there now for others to go for. Black Jack isn’t the fastest boat in the world, but this record isn’t just about speed. The planning is more important than putting the boat in the water.

I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Dave Manning for his time and experience (not that he's a veteran).

Hi, no camera onboard but it was good to get through the swellies with the gearbox still attached!

Cool achievement guys. I'd love to go round Anglesey in a boat (and all along that coastline, having looked at Puffin Island and Great Orme out of my window for the best part of 4 years when I lived up on the hillside at Llanfairfechan). Maybe we'll re-engine Blue Ice and come up and have a go at beating your record!

P.S. More details including the rules for this new record and contact information needed by those who would like to have a go at breaking Ian & Dave's record (but please leave it a little while so they can enjoy their success!) can be found in the forthcoming issue of BIBOA's club magazine Riblines, which should be dropping through letterboxes in the next few days.

Well done Ian and Dave but I'm surprised you didn't get SAGA to sponsor the Navigator
